- as the gardener doesn’t walk on the garden bed, the soil doesn’t become compacted
- the soil will remain light and loose allowing it to hold more air helping the vegetable roots to grow with less effort
- ability to reduce the number of weeds
- if using close plant spacing your raised vegetable garden bed will create a micro-climate which will contain moisture and further discourage weeds.
Fill with compost, mulch, good soil and fertilzer mix.

I wouldn't need one except for this urgent need that has come up to house this young man so I prefer to not go out and buy something that I only need short term. For those that are wondering what a Gem Squash is, it's a popular vegetable in South Africa. There is many ways if cooking the Gem Squash. You can cut them in half, boil them and put butter in them, again, cut in half, scoop out the seeds, fill with them with cream corn and a bit of cheese on top then roast.
