A Christchurch community board has sided with 834 residents who are calling for traffic lights to be installed at the Harewood, Breens and Gardiners roads intersection.

The Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board unanimously decided on Saturday to recommend lights be installed, despite council staff opposing the idea.

Council staff asked the board not to favour traffic lights because an independent safety review said lights were likely to increase the chance of a serious or fatal crash. Staff recommended changes to the configuration of the intersection, but this was not favoured by the board.

A final decision will be made by the council, following a recommendation from the infrastructure, transport and environment committee.

Support a Kiwi dad this Father's Day

Julia de Ruiter from The Salvation Army NZ

Father's Day is just around the corner and for many Kiwi dads, getting a treat isn't an option due to the family's limited disposable income or being a solo dad. You can make Father's Day go further by donating a Father's Bundle to a Kiwi family for only $19.

At this time of year, we want to acknowledge all the dads in New Zealand who work hard to provide for their families - particularly the families who can't make ends meet. So, we created a bundle of goodies that these Kiwi dads will love! The bundle has some chicken, a chunky soup, an apple pie for the family to share, plus a chocolate bar (just for Dad)!

It’s 1964 but the sixties aren’t swinging for Mary Adams: 19-years-old, unmarried and pregnant. She is sent in secrecy and shame to St. Saviours, a Church of England mother-and-baby home run by a formidable Matron.

Mary is set to work in the laundry and shares a room with the tough-talking Queenie. The girls in the home bond over a love of girl-group records, which entertain, console and inspire as the birth of their babies approaches. When Mary finds she is expected to give up her child for adoption, she begins a desperate fight.

“Amanda Whittington, who was the first writer to give this subject dramatic treatment, is an undiscussed yet ubiquitous sort of writer.” - THE GUARDIAN

“Has the heartstring-tugging potency of a pop classic.” - INDEPENDENT

“If this play were a person, you’d want to hold it and hug it.” - THE GUARDIAN

Be My Baby Consistently appears in Nick Hern Book’s Top Ten Most Performed Plays, and Features in 100 Great Plays for Women by Lucy Kerbel. This production of Be My Baby is Garry's first repeat in the director's seat, after first staging the production in 2009 with Riccarton Players. Such is the lasting impression of this script, he just had to do it again for the Elmwood stage.

It will be the first fully democratic Environment Canterbury (ECan) election for 12 years but only one councillor sacked by the National government in 2010 is keen to stand again.

Nominations for candidates for the seven regional constituencies closed on Friday yesterday at midday, with 39 received for the 14 positions at the council table.

Six of the 12 current councillors are standing again, but Rik Tindall is the only member of the regional council dismissed more than nine years ago willing to have another go.
