New Zealand may experience strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore following a magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the East Coast of Russia at 2025-07-30 11:25 AM.

Strong currents and surges can injure and drown people. There is a danger to swimmers, surfers, people fishing, and anyone in or near the water close to shore.

People in or near the sea in the following areas should move out of the water, off beaches and shore areas and away from harbours, marinas, rivers and estuaries.

AREAS UNDER THREAT:
ALL COASTAL AREAS OF THE NORTH ISLAND, GREAT BARRIER ISLAND, THE SOUTH ISLAND, STEWART ISLAND, and the CHATHAM ISLANDS (updated: 3.02pm, 30/07/2025)

ADVICE FOR PEOPLE IN AREAS UNDER THREAT:
STAY OFF THE BEACHES AND SHORE AREAS

People on boats, live-aboards and at marinas should leave their boats/vessels and move onto shore. Do not return to boats unless instructed by officials.

There is no need to evacuate other areas unless directly advised by local civil defence authorities. Coastal inundation (flooding of land areas near the shore) is not expected as a result of this event. We are advising people to:
- Move out of the water, off beaches and shore areas and away from harbours, marinas, rivers and estuaries.
- Do not go to the coast to watch the unusual wave activity as there may be dangerous and unpredictable surges.
- Listen to local civil defence authorities and follow any instructions.
- Share this information with family, neighbours and friends.
- Strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges will continue for several hours and the threat must be regarded as real until the Civil Defence states otherwise.

The situation may change as new information becomes available. Listen to the radio or TV for updates, or check www.civildefence.govt.nz...

From Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga:

“I wanted to let you know about an upcoming Public Meeting I will be hosting on Saturday 9 August, to provide the local community with an update on the Reeves Road Flyover.

With major works beginning in the coming months as construction of the Flyover and the next stage of the Eastern Busway to Botany progresses, it is important you be provided with an update on what this entails.

At the meeting, I will be joined by senior members of the Eastern Busway Alliance, the organisation responsible for the project, who will give a presentation on the upcoming works plans and timings, and how it will impact travel in the area.”

At school I was treated as and told I was useless by many teachers. Most made no attempt to find out or remedy why I was not meeting the same standards as others. The answer was very simple and nothing to do with ADHD or anything like that. The remedy was in the teacher’s hands but they were not interested in finding it except ONE. After leaving school I became an assistant company secretary in a large public company. I was a social work manager specialising in child abuse and psychiatry. I ran my own law business and in New Zealand set up and successfully ran and sold my own retail business. A financial success of my own making in spite of !!! I am not blowing mY own trumpet. I am saying to teachers and parents look at how children are learning .
Adjust your approach to meet the analysis. It is not complicated it just takes a bit of extra effort and interest.

There are a number of supports available to help people who are struggling with debt or inadequate income. If you’re in this situation, you might be entitled to some assistance.

📌 If you have lost your job or are unable to work, you may be eligible for a benefit from Work and Income.

Work and Income also provide financial assistance for people in work or not on a benefit who are struggling to cover basic costs. Work and Income may help with costs such as dental treatment, power bills, food, school costs, bond for your landlord etc.

If you have children, you can check you are getting your correct entitlement through Inland Revenue (IRD) - such as FamilyBoost or Working for Families.

If you have health or disability costs, you may qualify for assistance from Work and Income to help cover these costs e.g. through a Community Services card, Pharmaceutical Subsidy card, Total Mobility Card etc.

Other costs you may be able to get help with (whether that's through Work and Income, Inland Revenue, your service provider, or another source) include accommodation costs, funeral costs, student loan repayments, and credit contracts debt.

👉 If you need immediate emergency assistance with food or other essentials, you can contact the CAB, and a volunteer will put you in touch with appropriate services. Call our free phone number 0800 367 222, contact us via our website cab.org.nz or visit your local CAB (no appointment needed).

A few weeks ago, the Neighbourly team shared a round of complaints over our morning cuppa about the challenges of juggling runny noses and work commitments.

After reading Flip Grater's opinion piece, Playing germ roulette with our kids’ health, we felt a collective sense of relief - another parent shares our niggling worries.

We wanted to check in with our online neighbours: do you feel the same way? We are all busy, and keeping children home from school is sometimes impossible given other responsibilities. Busy lives and the apparent loss of collective energy around monitoring cold symptoms have led to more students and staff in shared spaces with sniffles and coughs.
But what do you think? Is this a concern?

We want to know: Are there clear Guidelines on when to keep kids off of school?
Should we be having a nuanced conversation about risk management, and how to better support working families?
Share your opinion with us below!
