Come to this festive Live Day to celebrate Matariki, explore connections to our taiao (environment) and learn more about the tenets of the Māori New Year such as remembrance, acknowledging our bounty and planning for the future.

Step back in time and experience the Village alive with costumed volunteers undertaking daily tasks such as baking on the range, butter-making and their specialised trades. Interactive demonstrations will take place throughout the day, as well as the following highlights:

- Raranga Harakeke: Weaving Workshop at 11am (adults) & 1:30 (children)
- Poi Workshop with Poi Yeah at 10:30
- Gardening Talk: Plants and their 1800s Medicinal Uses at 11:30am & 1:30pm
- Kite Making craft

Admission: 50% OFF ALL TICKETS for this special Live Day! All Welcome! Adult $8, student/senior $6, child $4.

No booking required except for weaving and poi workshops as places are limited. Book via Eventfinda or email village@historicalvillage.org.nz or call (09) 576 9505. Children’s weaving workshop suitable for age 10+, ages 8-10 must be supervised. Participating and non-participating parents must purchase admission

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
