My editorial in the Eastern Courier of Friday, March 3 - Round the Bays this Sunday
Arthur Lydiard would be proud. Eastern Courier reporter Liu Chen and the athletes of the International Women's Association NZ have done us proud, too, as they complete their training and line up in the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays run fun on Sunday, story page 8. Ladies, run the race of your lives!
What a tradition Round the Bays is. As an Aucklander I'm proud to know it endures - like Santa parades - as a true Auckland event on the cultural calendar.
Barrel-chested, straight-shooting Lydiard, who lived in Clovelly Road, Bucklands Beach, made Round the Bays possible. Decades earlier, the legendary runner and coach - of Sir Peter Snell, Sir Murray Halberg, John Davies, Barry Magee, Bill Baillie and many more - had scientifically proven by endless running and medical testing that jogging was good for one's health and well-being.
That started a craze that saw many out pounding the pavements. Round the Bays was created to bring them together once a year to celebrate the joy of running in a beautiful place. Pace yourselves...
