Waitomo, Waipā and Ōtorohanga residents can now freephone 0800 800 405 if they are struggling to access food, groceries, medication or other household goods and services.
The freephone service, established by the Waikato Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group, is available between 7am and 7pm daily, but does not replace other government helplines already in operation.
“We’ve moved quickly to set up this helpline, which started operating today. We don’t know how big the need is right now, and the reality is that it’s likely to change while we’re under Alert Level 4,” said Waikato Region Civil Defence Group Controller, Julian Snowball.
“People who don’t need help right now may require assistance in a couple of weeks, and that’s where this freephone number will become more important when it comes to ensuring everyone has access to the basic necessities.”
Being in lockdown makes us experience all sorts of things: anxiety, loneliness, fear. Need to talk? Free phone or text 1737.

The deadline for Waipā Youth Awards applications has been extended in the wake of the nationwide lockdown.

Now in its 18th year, the awards recognise achievements in academic, community service, leadership, sporting and arts/culture categories.

Youth aged 14-18 years who live in, or have attended school in Waipā for at least six months of the 2019 academic year are eligible to enter. Applicants will now have until 5pm, Friday 29 May to apply.

The awards night event was cancelled earlier this month due to restrictions around mass gatherings and will be replaced with an online announcement of award-winners in July, in line with Ministry of Health guidelines.

Mayor Jim Mylchreest said it was important to recognise Waipā young leaders in this unprecedented time.

“Although the awards might look different this year, we will still celebrate our exceptional young people and their contribution to our schools and communities,” he said.

“Young people play a vital role in creating the wonderful place that Waipā is – and our nationwide lockdown doesn’t change that.”

Last year’s awards attracted the largest number of applicants ever, with 122 nominations received and 78 awards handed out.

Nomination forms are available at waipadc.govt.nz/youthawards.

Residents living in Waitomo, Ōtorohanga and Waipa districts who are in need of help are being asked to seek assistance through official channels.

Western Waikato Emergency Operating Centre (WWEOC) Controller David Simes says residents should follow the information set out on the Government website at COVID19.govt.nz.

He says the WWEOC is hearing of people in the community who are still unsure of where to go for help, particularly if they are feeling unwell, are unsure about self-isolation, are seeking financial assistance, or just need to talk to someone.

“The best way to find out what support is available is by going to the dedicated COVID-19 website,” says Simes.

“If someone in the household is developing symptoms of COVID-19 like a cough, fever, shortness of breath, sneezing or a runny nose, please follow the advice from the Ministry of Health and contact your regular GP or Healthline on 0800 358 5453. If you are in need of urgent assistance call 111.”

He said managing mental well-being was especially important right now.

“Support with grief, anxiety, distress or mental well-being is available by calling or texting 1737 – free, anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will reach a trained counsellor,” he said.

For anyone unsure of what financial assistance may be available, visit the website or call the free government helpline on 0800 779 997, which operates from 8am–1am, 7 days a week.

“The website also includes information on self-isolation, limiting contact with other people if you’re unwell, and maintaining good hygiene practices. It’s a great tool for us all to use and I encourage everyone to use this as their main source of information.”

Hi neighbours,
As some of you may have heard, the government advised that non-daily publications, such as community newspapers, are not considered essential services under the news and media designation during the Alert Level 4 lockdown. Unfortunately that means we won’t be able to print and deliver your paper over the remaining period of the lockdown. However, we will be putting all important local news/updates on our Neighbourly page during the period.
