Waipa Youth Awards deadline extended

Lawrence Gullery Reporter from Cambridge Edition

The deadline for Waipā Youth Awards applications has been extended in the wake of the nationwide lockdown.

Now in its 18th year, the awards recognise achievements in academic, community service, leadership, sporting and arts/culture categories.

Youth aged 14-18 years who live in, or have attended school in Waipā for at least six months of the 2019 academic year are eligible to enter. Applicants will now have until 5pm, Friday 29 May to apply.

The awards night event was cancelled earlier this month due to restrictions around mass gatherings and will be replaced with an online announcement of award-winners in July, in line with Ministry of Health guidelines.

Mayor Jim Mylchreest said it was important to recognise Waipā young leaders in this unprecedented time.

“Although the awards might look different this year, we will still celebrate our exceptional young people and their contribution to our schools and communities,” he said.

“Young people play a vital role in creating the wonderful place that Waipā is – and our nationwide lockdown doesn’t change that.”

Last year’s awards attracted the largest number of applicants ever, with 122 nominations received and 78 awards handed out.

Nomination forms are available at waipadc.govt.nz/youthawards.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
