Kiwi musician Stan Walker says there are "rough diamonds" in the hood in Hamilton, and the theatre plans could give them an opportunity.
Walker grew up in Hamilton - once attending Fairfield Intermediate and Hamilton Boys' High - and was back in town on Tuesday.
As well as hosting a workshop at Zeal, he gave a plug for $73.9 million plans for a Waikato Regional Theatre.
"I reckon there's a lot of rough diamonds here waiting to be given an opportunity," he said.
"The hood is where you're going to get the most talented people. They just haven't been exposed to [arts] like everyone else has."

Roger Halls Sparkling Comedy Social Climbers
What do you call six women stranded on a mountain in the rain: ridiculous! Or you could call them social climbers β¦ but just not to their faces! Once at the hut, not only do they unload their packs full of food, wine, and a souvenir rock; their hang-ups get unloaded as well.

Once at the hut, not only do they unload their packs full of food, wine, and a souvenir rock; their hang-ups get unloaded as well.
Torrential rain and a flooded bridge keep them stranded for three days. What they get up to, to help pass the time, raises a few eyebrows and will have you laughing, tearing up and applauding enthusiastically as they bare all.
Of course, itβs not just souls that are exposed, thereβs a little nudity, a cracking thunderstorm, explosions, screaming bloody murder, ghostly stories, a birthday celebration, a sΓ©ance, a drunken party, confessions, meltdowns and revelations that will keep you and your friends entertained throughout.
Perfectly timed for your own social groupβs ascent into summer, donβt miss this hilarious play when it comes to a town near you in November.
