(A CONTRAST between then and now) My grandfather Howard Mays, (another son of Oliver Mays see … View more(A CONTRAST between then and now) My grandfather Howard Mays, (another son of Oliver Mays see previous uploads) built this home (1913) at 19 Fourth Avenue, Mt Albert. (Later renamed Fontenoy St). I spent a lot of time there and knew the large property well. From about the age of 9, I used to mow the lawns, initially with a hand mower. To do this, I would run across Auckland from my home in Three Kings or later, from Epsom. From Three Kings, I occasionally pushed a trolley containing my younger sister over to 4th Avenue and back. How different our society was in the 1940s! Can you imagine parents would consider it normal today? I took this photo of my grandparents with a box camera about 1945 and developed the film in the washhouse.

Police are continuing to search for a man wanted in relation to a Pahiatua woman’s death last month.
On the afternoon of 15 October, Karen Gilbert-Palmer, 74, was found deceased at her Arthur Street home by a friend who had been unable to contact her.

On the afternoon of 15 October, Karen Gilbert-Palmer, 74, was found deceased at her Arthur Street home by a friend who had been unable to contact her.
A homicide investigation was launched, and 52-year-old Jeremy Robertson was identified as a suspect.
The victim’s vehicle was located in at the Blue and Green lakes lookout in Rotorua the following morning, and Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thompson, Area Investigations Manager, says Police believe Robertson is likely still in that area.
“We have been making a lot of enquiries to locate Jeremy, and we are planning further Police activity in that area in the coming weeks."
“I want to thank the members of the public who came forward with information in the early days of the investigation, including the call that led us to the car within hours of it being parked up.”
Detective Senior Sergeant Thompson said work to find Robertson had not stopped.
“Our focus remains on seeing justice served for Mrs Gilbert-Palmer, and finding Jeremy is key to that.”
Anyone who sees Robertson should not approach him.
Call 111 immediately and advise Police.

The street was known then as Grey St but was renamed after the Mays brothers who were … View more9 Mays St, Devonport. Built 1908 by Selwyn Mays, son of Oliver Mays. Selwyn was a Chief Crown Prosecutor and younger brother of my Grandfather, Howard Mays (see tomorrow's "Special Villa"). The street was known then as Grey St but was renamed after the Mays brothers who were well-known identities in Devonport The house was owned from 1926 to 1985 by the Mason family who were related by marriage to the Mays family.
Classic features of the villa include a distinctive filigreed facade and upper and lower balustraded veranda with cast iron decorations. The tower was built by the present (2007) owners but something similar had apparently had been planned by Selwyn. (photographs by Paul Knight.) Purely by coincidence, Helen and Catherine Knight, daughters of my Father's brother Denis, each lived here while they were at university, not knowing anything of the admittedly indirect family connection. About 1926, Selwyn dived off the Devonport wharf to rescue a drunk and scraped his arm on barnacles under the wharf lavatory. He almost died from the resulting septicaemia and, unable to make a full recovery, his career ended.

My maternal great grandfather, Oliver Mays, arrived in NZ from Leicester on November 21, 1858. His wife and daughter arrived in 1860 and they lived at 7 King Edward Parade. The B&W photo was taken some time in the 1920s, the other photo I took in March 2011.
Apart from being headmaster at what is now Devonport School he contributed greatly to Devonport but the list of his contributions is too long to copy. The photos are of the first Mays family home in NZ. (2 other Mays homes built by Oliver's sons to follow.)
In the second photo the house (on the right) had been moved forward to make room for an apartment at the back.
