According to Orion's website approximately 50,000 properties had no power on Thursday morning.
Power outages have been reported at many suburbs including Addington, Cashmere, Spreydon, Riccarton, Sydenham, Hoon Hay Valley, Wigram, Tai Tapu, Sockburn, Westmorland, Wigram and Akaroa.
The New Zealand Transport Authority said signals at 35 intersections were out in south Christchurch as a result of the outage. Road users were asked to apply the give way rules.
An Orion spokeswoman said
the power outage was caused by an issue in the Transpower line from Twizel. Transpower manage the national electricity grid.
A crash involving four vehicles happened the intersection of Marshland Rd and Prestons Rd. An Ambulance was declined but NZTA advised motorists that delays were possible.

I live next to the Victory Drain and its possible they are coming up the drain. My Pest Controller says he has just been to another house in Hillsborough Terrace, so maybe this is another plague like the last one. I recommend that you get bait laid in your ceilings ASAP. The last lot I had chewed through plastic water pipes and caused a flood inside my walls, on top of the bedroom ceiling and wet carpets before I stopped telling myself I was dreaming about the chewing noises (also known as denial!). So far I have just lost sleep. Hopefully it will be all over by the end of the week.
