The controversial relocation of Christchurch's Citizens' War Memorial has received financial backing for a proposed move to Cranmer Square.

The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust (CEAT), set up to administer post-earthquake donations, has confirmed it will "support" the removal of the 82-year-old cenotaph, which has stood alongside Christ Church Cathedral since 1937, if resource consent is approved.

Moving the 300-tonne cenotaph is estimated to cost up to $1.5 million, but CEAT secretary Neil Cooper would not say how much the trust would cover "as we've not made this figure public yet".

Imagine having to sit in the dark on a cold night, wrapped in a blanket for warmth because you couldn’t afford heating or power?

Sadly, this is a reality for many Kiwi families living in poverty at the moment, as they struggle through a cold winter without even the basics to survive. They are often forced to choose between providing food, warmth and shelter for their family, knowing the profound impact that going without even one of these things will have on their health and well-being.

Please support this ‘Lights On’ Winter Appeal and help keep families safe, warm and sheltered this winter.

Firefighters spent hours trying to save Antonio Hall, on Riccarton Rd, after the fire erupted about 5.20pm on Friday.

At its peak, more than 50 firefighters were involved in putting out the "significant" blaze, and about 50 neighbouring properties were evacuated for several hours. Residents were able to return home about 8.30pm and all road closures had since been lifted.

BUNNINGS Riccarton (Tower Junc) SAUSAGE SIZZLE. 9am Sun 14th July 2019
Please come down to Bunnings Riccarton on Saturday the 13th October 2018 for our Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser. Its being run by the Collective for the Homeless Charitable Trust.

Our primay role is to help homeless people get into homes through a Hui based service. We also run a free breakfast every week. The intiative looks to cut through the barriers that contribute to homelessness. For example often people dont have ID, and this can be barrier to acquiring a home, acquiring an income (benefit, job or training), accessing health services, amongs other things. The service has one paid co-ordinator and is largely made up of volunteers.

So bring some friends and have a lovely, hot sausage (or two). The more the merrier!!!
