MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Christchurch.
Thunderstorms this afternoon and evening are expected to bring heavy rain and hail to some places. There is also a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms developing, which could produce hail greater than 20mm in diameter. There have also been reports of a tornado.
Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, as well as make driving conditions hazardous.
This watch will be updated by 8:00pm this evening. Keep up to date here.

This artist's impression shows how it could look after the planned projects have been finished. The green has a path, flowering cherry trees, and seating. The wall behind it has a full mural, panels created by local school children and a selfie stand in front of a large colourful kea.
What addition features do you think could enhance it? If you have an idea write it on the back of the flyers available at the green and in the library or email bishgreen05@gmail.com before 30 November.
It looks like it's going to be a good day on Sunday for Celebrate Bishopdale! The weather is forecast to be warm, partly cloudy with little wind. Make sure you come down to Bishopdale Park at 11am-2pm to join in the family fun. There is something for everyone 😁☀️
