Poll: Should New Zealand take in 1500 refugees? Is it enough?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The annual refugee quota will lift from 1000 to 1500 by July 2020, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced this week. Before 2016 the refugee quota sat static at 750 for 30 years, well behind many other western nations. The National Government then raised it to 1000. Is it enough?

Hi all, my name is Jess and I am a Chch resident walking from my home in Papanui to the beehive in Wellington, with my two sons, to raise awareness of the mental health crisis NZ is currently in. I leave on October the 1st..10 days time!!

I am also raising money for STAND, a nationwide service trying to help as many struggling children as possible. As you may know there are too many kiwis (of all ages) struggling and not enough services, funding, resources, staff and time to meet the high demand so the money I raise will go directly towards psychologists seeing children faster to shorten their recovery time. I would love it if you could donate even a few dollars to this worth while cause. Here is a link to my give a little page where you can read more about what I am doing.

A dog owner who believes all dogs in moving vehicles should be restrained is applauding new animal welfare regulations coming into force soon.

From next month, the regulations can mean fines for dog owners who don't have their pooches restrained on moving vehicles. Dogs on the back of a truck, trailer or ute, travelling on a public road, had to be tied up with a leash or rope, if not in a cage or crate.

Those caught breaking that law could be fined up to $900 under new Animal Welfare Regulations from next month. Read more from Stuff here

Hi Bruce,
Chris Jones the Vice President of the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) is setting off from Placemakers, Cranford Street in Christchurch on Sunday 23rd September at 9:00 AM. on a 1,200 km bike ride to the Pedal4Prostate event being held at Hampton Downs on Sunday 7th October. If you have a road bike and want to ride with Chris for part of the way out of Christchurch (how about Rangiora) or all of the way up to Culverden on the first day then he would love to have you join him. Please be at Placemakers, Cranford Street between 8:30 – 8:45 AM for a 9:00 AM departure. Even if you’re not a cyclist then come along to help send Chris off on his way .
As well as raising the awareness around prostate cancer and fundraising, Chris also wants to remember the men who have not been as fortunate as himself and have sadly have passed away prematurely – like Michael Morris a friend of his from Christchurch – who at only 62 passed away after a long battle with prostate cancer that he could no longer continue to fight.
Chris is challenging himself in more ways than one and has also come up with a fun way of sponsorship and would like as many people as possible to get in behind him with his fundraising effort for the PCF. Here’s how it works:
1. A cent or more for each of the 1,200 km to the event

2. Ten cents or more for each of the km’s he rides at the Pedal4Prostate event.

3. A bonus if he achieves a personal best of exceeding 120 km in the four hours of the Pedal4Prostate event.

4. An opportunity to have a day of his ride dedicated to the memory of someone you know who was not as fortunate as he in surviving prostate cancer.

If you would like to support Chris with his fundraising efforts for the PCF in this way then here’s the link to the online pledge form and also the Facebook page “I Bike 4 U” that he has created.

Chris is also looking for someone to host him and one other for the night in the St Arnaud area in particular (shower, washing machine, meal, bed, breakfast).

If you have any questions or can assist Chris with his search for a host then do contact him directly on 027 435 4523 or via email vp@prostate.org.nz.
