Selling of 2500 State Houses in Christchurch

Petra from Sydenham

The Government wants to sell 2500 Christchurch State Houses before the end of 2017.
National has taken $ 523 m of profits out of Housing New Zealand, including a $ 118m dividend for 2015/16. That's enough to have built over 1,500 State houses. At the same time, they have sold off 2,500 houses ( net ) since 2011, and are moving to sell thousands more to merchant bankers, property developers and overseas companies.

If we don't stop this now people on lower incomes depending on affordable rental housing will be at the mercy of greedy landlords. The high levels of rent is only possible by the government subsidising the rent through the " Accomodation benefit" at a cost to the taxpayer of $1.8 billion per year.

I am sure that we all know someone living in a Housing New Zealand house, it's their "Home" !
