South atrium to reopen after Auckland War Memorial Museum makeover

Caryn Wilkinson Reporter from Community News

Auckland War Memorial Museum reopens its south atrium entrance on December 3 after 18 months of renovations.

Visitors will see new spaces, experiences, art works and eateries along with the exhibition Brickman Awesome: Epic LEGO Creations.

Work to transform the museum was launched in 2013 and 35% of the floor will have been changed by 2021,when the facelift comes to fruition.

Auckland Museum has worked with iwi and pacific communities in Auckland to create the new South Atrium as a space for pōwhiri, whakatau and other cultural celebrations, events and research.

It will be a place for visitors to exchange experiences, share knowledge and information.

A 7.5m tall replica of Nasa's Space Launch System (SLS), made from 450,000 Lego bricks, will go on display in the new lego exhibition.

The rocket, which certified professional Lego builder Ryan “The Brickman” McNaught spent 500 hours constructing, is one of more than 35 giant Lego models set to be showcased at the exhibition Brickman Awesome: Epic Lego Creations.

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
