The Fruits of Our Labours: Chinese Fruit Shops in New Zealand

Annette from St Heliers

"The Fruits of Our Labours" is a substantial two volume book recording the history of Chinese fruit shops throughout New Zealand.

It traces the development of the shops from the general store-cum-greengrocer of the 1880s through to the fresh fruit and vegetable retailer of today. The history of the fruiterers reflects the history of small business and retailers throughout the country.

The 1950s and 60s were the heyday years of Chinese fruit shops: a time of economic growth and prosperity after the hard times of the Depression and the Second World War, both of which affected Chinese fruiterers.

Illustrated with many maps, and archival and family photographs.

Pre-order at the pre-launch price (February 2018) by emailing fruitsofourlabours@gmail.com for an order form.
