Teachers strike

Matt from St Heliers

Would someone in the know please tell me what teachers get paid and how many hours they work? I can not seem to get this information and therefore am unable to have an opinion on whether their demands are realistic or not. Thank you.

Plastic bag confusion.

Matt from St Heliers

I know I must be getting a bit vague but would someone please elucidate for me the situation of the plastic bags ban? I understand the environmental impact. What I do not understand is the policies being implemented. This is what I think I know and so please shoot me down if I have it wrong.

I know I must be getting a bit vague but would someone please elucidate for me the situation of the plastic bags ban? I understand the environmental impact. What I do not understand is the policies being implemented. This is what I think I know and so please shoot me down if I have it wrong.
1. Mum (Ms Jacinta Adern) has told us that it will be compulsory to ban single use plastic bags;
2. Mum (Ms Adern) seems to have told us, the shopper, that we can not use these bags;
3. I have read no where, where mum has asked the supermarkets to stop using plastic bags in their business, nor the packaging industry, nor the disposable nappy industry. All of which use plastic bags.
4. Mum, mum...!!!!MUM!!!!! What is a single use plastic bag mum? I use my plastic bags to catch the household waste. That which is dry waste (tissues, dust, paper) is placed in the 'single use' plastic bag and then when full, emptied into the rubbish or recycling and then reused. This is probably an expanded definition of 'singe-use' plastic bags.....oh yes...multiple-use-single-use plastic bags. The waste that is wet is indeed then thrown out, but then that waste tends to be me clearing up dog poo when walking peoples dogs. I therefore do not take a plastic bag from the doggy poo station. Result. Two plastic bags saved.
5. I cant really use a bag for life, but I do at times, but it is a bit expensive and not very good for the environment because I then have to buy plastic bags for my rubbish bins and for the dog poo collection (that is collecting dog poo - not my dog poo collection!)
6. Mum...mum...!!!!!Mum!!!! - did you look at the German experience? Or just blithely follow populist views? In Germany the supermarkets charge quite a bit for a plastic bag so...guess what? People take care of their plastic bags and bring them back for another 'single use'. See previous definition: multiple-use-single-use plastic bags.

So again, with a little bit of thought, we can come up with solutions that are more sophisticated than banning, censoring, and imposing on free choice. But then I get confused easily. I thought we were once the leading nation in developing innovative approaches to life's challenges. What happened?

Do dog owners hang bags of poo in your local park?

Danielle Clent Reporter from East & Bays Courier

Hi neighbours, an Auckland man has had enough of dog owners who leave their pets poo bags tied to trees or fences in his local park. Have you noticed this happening? How do you dispose of your dog's poo?

Hi neighbours,

Do you think primary teachers and principals should be striking? Thousands of teachers have taken industrial action on Wednesday, with dozens of rallies planned around the country. They aim to gain attention for better pay, conditions and incentives to attract new teachers. Although about 30,000 people in the profession are involved in the strike, not everyone agrees with it.

So, what are your thoughts on the strike? Do you think teachers deserve better pay? Or should they have stayed around the negotiating table for longer? Are you a teacher or parent with views on the topic? Let us know in the replies!
