Glazed Christmas Ham

Saint Johns Butchery

Christmas is only one week away ... but it's not too late to try the stuff we've been smoking!

You can still order your Christmas ham from Saint Johns Butchery, cured in-store using traditional methods. Call the team on 09 521 6319 or email dave@saintjohnsbutchery.co.nz to order your Christmas ham now!

Looking for some inspiration? Here's a tried and true recipe for glazed ham that is sure to please...

You will need...

One tin of pineapple slices
Whole cloves
Brown sugar ... 2 tbsp for the glaze + extra for rubbing
Pinch of mustard powder
1 tsp honey

The glaze...

Add the juice from the tin of pineapple slices to a bowl with 2 tbsp brown sugar, mustard and honey and stir to combine.

Prepare your ham...

Turn the oven on to 150 degrees (C).

Remove the skin from the ham. Score* the fat in a lattice pattern then rub brown sugar onto the fat and into the cuts.

Push a cloves into the meat where the cuts cross each other. Place the pineapple rings, evenly spread, on top of the ham.

Gently pour two thirds of the glaze over the ham. If glazing half a ham, cover the cut face with tin foil to stop it from drying out.

Place the ham in the oven for approximately 1 hour. Baste often with the remaining glaze during this time.

Remove the ham from the oven and serve, or cover with tin foil and wrap it with plenty of newspaper to keep your ham hot for up to four hours.

Enjoy!

* Score - this is a shallow cut to the meat

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
