LIVE DAY! | Settling In: Howick 175th

Annaliese Lines from Howick Historical Village

November 2022 marks 175 years since Howick’s Fencible families set foot in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland in 1847 and began their lives in a new land. Come to this Howick Historical Village Live Day and discover the journey made by these settlers and experience what their lives were like in the early days of Howick, then known as Owairoa, the land of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki.

Immerse yourself in history on this significant anniversary. Learn what a Fencible would have packed in their trunk for the long sea voyage or join a tour to discover the history of our original Fencible cottages and who lived in them. Come and see the coal range in Puhi Nui homestead fired up, blacksmiths at work at the forge, and attend a Victorian school lesson.

The sweet shop will be open and filled with old-fashioned lollies, fudge, and treats. Bring a picnic to enjoy in the heritage gardens or have brunch or lunch at the Homestead Café!

Also on site - TINTYPE CENTRAL's pop-up photography studio! Meet photographer Adrian Cook who produces captivating images using 100% authentic 19th-century wet plate techniques. Learn more or book in for a special portrait session at tintypecentral.com...

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
