The new sanctions are:
ππΌ Report Job Search: a requirement to undertake and report on a minimum of three job-search activities every week for four weeks. This sanction supports increased accountability for beneficiaries who are meant to be looking for work.
ππΌ Upskilling: a requirement to attend and participate in one or more employment-related training courses or programmes for a minimum of five hours per week over four weeks. This sanction supports beneficiaries to build the skills they need to get into work.
Beneficiaries on their first obligation failure would only be eligible for these non-financial sanctions if they were in active case management or had dependent children, and they must attend an MSD appointment.
Social Development and Employment Minister Louise Upston said the obligations were passed by Parliament in May and that they were not "unduly onerous".
"They're basic expectations. They reinforce accountability for those failing to meet their obligations, while also recognising that reducing benefits isnβt the answer for everyone."
Upston noted most job seekers were fulfilling obligations with less than 2% on the red or orange settings. "The 98.5% of job seekers at green are committed to finding work, and MSD is fully committed to supporting them to do so."
The traffic light system, introduced in August last year, categorises beneficiaries with work or social obligations into green, orange, or red status.
Those in orange have breached obligations without a valid reason. If they fail to comply within five working days, they move to red and face sanctions.

Biosecurity New Zealand has been quick to respond to the threat of a small yellow-legged hornet (YLH) nest reported by a resident in the suburb of Glenfield.
It is the first time that a queen YLH has been found in New Zealand, after two male hornets were found earlier this year.
The YLH feeds on honeybees ππ as well as other insects.
We are very fortunate to be free of hornet populations in NZ. Please spread this to your networksβwe need the help of Aucklanders to eliminate any further risk.

What do yellow-legged hornets look like?
These hornets (a hornet is a type of wasp) are larger than the other five species of wasps in NZ. They are round 2 cm to 3 cm long with a black head and a yellow face. Between the first and second abdominal segment is a narrow yellow band. The wings are a smoky brown colour and not transparent like other common wasps.

Weβd like to let you know about upcoming work as part of the Eastern Busway project so that youβre informed ahead of time.
Changes will be in place on TΔ« RΔkau Drive in both directions between PakΕ«ranga Road and William Roberts Road from Friday 24 October to Saturday 27 December. Please see the attached map.
Important information
There will be one lane open in each direction on Ti RΔkau Drive and the right turn from TΔ« RΔkau Drive to the South Eastern Highway will be closed.
Motorists will be able to access the South Eastern Highway using RΔ Hihi β flyover.
Please allow extra travel time during peak hours while everyone adjusts to the reduced lane layout.
A section of footpath will be closed between the South Eastern Highway and Tiraumea Drive, along with the pedestrian crossings at that location. Signs will guide people to the nearest pedestrian crossing by Mattson Road to cross TΔ« RΔkau Drive. Your safety is our priority, please only use pedestrian crossings.
When itβs completed, the Eastern Busway will provide transport options for people to get to more places, more frequently. Thank you for your patience while the busway is built.
