A spokesperson for New Zealand’s biggest bank, ANZ, said it stopped accepting over-the-counter deposits into someone else’s account last year.
“You can still deposit cash into your own account over the counter or any ANZ accounts you are a signatory on, including business accounts.
“A customer who wants to make payments to another person can deposit the cash into their own account and then transfer the money electronically.
“An ANZ cardholder can also deposit cash into an ANZ ATM, which has the deposit function – a smart ATM. All ANZ NZ branches have at least one smart ATM.”
He said, at a smart ATM, a customer could also put money into another ANZ account.
Westpac said it also did not allow deposits into other accounts.
“Similar to most other banks, only personal account owners or authorised related-party signatories can make over-the-counter cash deposits into their own accounts.
“We also accept over-the-counter cash deposits from non-personal entities, such as organisations or clubs, although the depositor must also supply their full name and telephone number.
“From June 30, 2025, people will need a Westpac card when depositing cash into a Westpac personal account – their own or someone else’s – at our ATMs. There is no change for non-personal entities.”
ASB said its own customers could make deposits into other customers’ accounts. People who were not ASB customers could too, if they met ID requirements.
Financial coach Shula Newland said this seemed weird to some people.
“Legal tender can’t be banked into someone’s account to pay for something,” she said. “In my own personal experience, it now means, if someone wants to pay me in cash, I now have the chore of going down to the bank to have to bank it myself.”
Newland said moving away from cash meant everything could be tracked much more easily.
New Zealand Banking Association chief executive Roger Beaumont said banks were required to comply with the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act (AML), which could make accepting deposits difficult.
“The law aims to stop people trying to disguise the origin of criminal profits, such as drug trafficking or fraud,” he said. “Under the law, there are rules about verifying the source of the funds, and the identity of the person paying and the recipient.
“In cases where you would like to make a cash payment at your branch to an account in another bank, your bank may not be able to comply with these rules.
“Your bank may be able to suggest other ways you could make the payment.”
Banking expert Claire Matthews said that should not be a reason to stop accepting them.
“I would have thought it would just be a flag that meant an explanation is required and only for large amounts.”
The change appears to be because of the work involved for branch staff in accepting a deposit.
ANZ said it was not about AML so much as responding to changing customer behaviour.
“More people are choosing to do their banking online or through our GoMoney app, with less than 1% of banking transactions now made in person.”

Air New Zealand says it will add 130,000 seats on flights to Australia, Rarotonga, Fiji and Tahiti this summer.

Two new Airbus A320s and more customer demand for destinations including Adelaide have been cited as driving the expansion.
“That’s been enabled through two new 320Qs, or narrow-body aircraft, being delivered,” said Lucy Hall, the airline’s short-haul general manager.
“They’re 214-seat, narrow-body aircraft. One of them has already arrived and one is on its way, so we’ll be introducing that in the next couple of weeks into our network.”
The airline will this summer also deploy more wide-body aircraft on key routes.
Air New Zealand said the summer expansion would cement its position as the biggest transtasman carrier, ahead of rival Qantas.
The airline will add 8% more premium seats on its short-haul network and have up to 42 flights each week on widebody jets to Australia.
“We’re seeing really strong demand, particularly for Australia,” Hall added.
Perth was an increasingly popular destination for people flying from Auckland, she said.
Australia’s 2021 Census found at least 59,000 New Zealand-born people lived in the city, with three-quarters of them in the workforce.
Hall said Air New Zealand was growing its Auckland-Perth services from one a day to nine a week.
The airline said it would also add 30,000 seats on its Auckland-Perth route.
Hall told the Herald that Adelaide’s food culture and its Fringe Festival, set for February 20 to March 22 next year, were luring Kiwi travellers.
Christchurch–Adelaide is a new transtasman route, starting on October 27.
“We saw previously that a lot of those customers are travelling over the east coast of Australia, so this is just making it easier to get to Adelaide,” Hall said.
She said the airline tracked demand for the big eastern seaboard cities and reached the point where it felt demand was great enough to make that direct service to Adelaide viable.
Rival Qantas last month announced plans for new direct Auckland-Adelaide flights, starting on October 31.
But Air New Zealand said 1.7 million seats would be available on its transtasman flights between October this year and next March.
An average of up to six Air New Zealand wide-body jet flights a day would go to Australia.
The airline also planned an uplift in premium seating to meet what it called strong demand from both business and leisure travellers.
The Auckland-Sydney route would have an extra 25,000 seats, 30% of them premium, and up to 13 services a week.
The Auckland-Brisbane flight would get an extra 18,400 seats over summer.
“There’ll be extra seats over that busy Christmas period, but also in the shoulder periods leading in[to] and following Christmas,” Hall said.
The Auckland-Melbourne route would have up to 16,000 extra seats over summer, and also up to 13 wide-body services a week.
From Auckland to the Gold Coast, another 8500 seats would be added.
Air New Zealand said 25,000 extra seats would also be available on Pacific Islands flights this summer.
The Auckland-Rarotonga route would get 8000 more seats.
On the Fiji route, the Auckland-Nadi service would get 8600 more seats.
The airline said it would add 1600 seats to its Tahiti service, with a 37% increase in premium seating.
Hall said Boeing 787 Dreamliners or 777s serviced the Tahiti route.

So, with my outdoor clothes line hamstrung by this gloomy weather, what’s the best way to dry my washing?
I needed data. I put together a 3kg trial load of bath and tea towels, T-shirts, socks, jeans and synthetic sportswear. I gathered scales, a power meter and a sensor that records temperature and humidity. After being washed in my front-loading machine and spun at 1100rpm, my trial load weighed 4.2kg. That’s 1.2L of water I needed to remove. My ideal method would be minimal hassle, cheap, good for the environment, and it wouldn’t leave my home damp.
I tried five different drying methods and found a clear winner: my vented clothes dryer. It was easy to use, sent all the moisture outside, gave consistent results and, while it wasn’t free, forward-planning minimised the cost to my pocket and the environment. Whenever I can’t dry clothes outside, my dryer will shoulder the workload this winter.
TIP: Use the fastest spin your washing machine will allow and clothing can handle. Spinning at 1100rpm instead of 800rpm removed an extra third (600ml) of moisture from my test load.
Outside on a line
==============
Best for cost, environment and home health, but weather-dependent and a hassle.
On a calm, sunny winter day, six hours on the clothes line shifted just over 40% of the moisture in my washing. The method required me hanging my load out in the morning before I left for work, and remembering to pull it in before the sun dropped and the damp evening undid all my good work. One day of outside hanging didn’t dry my washing, but it was quicker and used less energy to finish it off in my dryer. On a good day, outside line drying costs nothing and has no environmental impact at all.
TIP: A breezy, overcast winter day is better at drying washing than a calm, sunny one.
Indoor on a rack
=============
No cost or environmental impact, but fills your home with moisture.
It’s easier hanging washing on a rack indoors than pegging it outside, and the method works even on filthy-wet days. It comes at zero cost to your wallet and uses no energy. However, my trial found a drying rack was far from a perfect solution. I set mine up in an unheated back room. Though large windows meant the rack was exposed to winter sun, there was no airflow around the wet clothes and I shifted just a third of the moisture in six hours. However, I could leave the load on the rack all day and night to dry. The biggest downside was to the health of my home – all of the moisture from my washing ended up in my back room.
TIP: Make like a DOC Hut: putting the drying rack next to (or above) an electric heater or woodburner will dry clothes faster and keep moisture airborne. You must ventilate the room well though (open a window or two), otherwise you’ll end up with an unhealthy living space full of warm, moist air.
TIP: Put the drying rack in your bathroom and run the extractor fan. It’ll add a few cents to your electricity bill, but the fan will suck some of the moisture outside, and the rest will be in a room designed to cope with damp.
Inside on a rack with a dehumidifier
=============================
A dehumidifier makes an indoor drying rack a better option (for a price).
Running a dehumidifier next to the clothes rack adds cost, but you get a triple-whammy of benefits: the dehumidifier heats the room, creates a breeze to help the laundry dry, and sucks up moisture. When I tried a Mitsubishi Electric model running full bore on “laundry” mode next to the drying rack, my clothes were dry in five hours and my room ended up 3°C warmer, with lower humidity than when I started. However, the dehumidifier used 1.9kWh of electricity (costing about 50¢). While I couldn’t fault the increased drying performance, the impact on my wallet was surprisingly high, and the dehumidifier’s noise rendered the room uninhabitable for five hours.
Which dehumidifiers score best for water removal, energy efficiency and quietness? Find out with our test results.
In a clothes dryer
==============
Minimal hassle and drying time, a healthy home, but a lighter wallet and environmental niggles.
Drying the load in my $600 Electrolux vented dryer (using a sensor program) took an hour. All the moisture vented outside. I was expecting it to be the most expensive option, the price I paid for convenience, but it used 1.9kWh – the same as running the dehumidifier for five hours. Looking at my dryer’s specifications, it makes sense: it has a 2100W heating element and a small motor to turn the drum, so an hour of sensor-controlled use should use about 2kW.
TIP: Check whether your electricity plan has cheaper periods, so you can save a few cents per load - some plans offer reduced off-peak rates or even free power for a short period each day. Make sure you're not paying a premium to dry your clothes at peak times.
