Biosecurity New Zealand has been quick to respond to the threat of a small yellow-legged hornet (YLH) nest reported by a resident in the suburb of Glenfield.
It is the first time that a queen YLH has been found in New Zealand, after two male hornets were found earlier this year.
The YLH feeds on honeybees 🐝💔 as well as other insects.
We are very fortunate to be free of hornet populations in NZ. Please spread this to your networks—we need the help of Aucklanders to eliminate any further risk.
Take a photo of any suspected sightings 📸 (as with any wasp keep your distance) and report it online at report.mpi.govt.nz or call 0800 80 99 66. ☎️
What do yellow-legged hornets look like?
These hornets (a hornet is a type of wasp) are larger than the other five species of wasps in NZ. They are round 2 cm to 3 cm long with a black head and a yellow face. Between the first and second abdominal segment is a narrow yellow band. The wings are a smoky brown colour and not transparent like other common wasps.

Recent fires have caused serious damage to these sacred sites — including Te Pane o Mataoho / Māngere Mountain last year. Even one spark can harm the cultural and natural beauty of our maunga.
Let’s protect these special places together.

“Kia ora,
We’d like to let you know about upcoming work as part of the Eastern Busway project so that you’re informed ahead of time.
Changes will be in place on Tī Rākau Drive in both directions between Pakūranga Road and William Roberts Road from Friday 24 October to Saturday 27 December. Please see the attached map.
Important information
There will be one lane open in each direction on Ti Rākau Drive and the right turn from Tī Rākau Drive to the South Eastern Highway will be closed.
Motorists will be able to access the South Eastern Highway using Rā Hihi – flyover.
Please allow extra travel time during peak hours while everyone adjusts to the reduced lane layout.
A section of footpath will be closed between the South Eastern Highway and Tiraumea Drive, along with the pedestrian crossings at that location. Signs will guide people to the nearest pedestrian crossing by Mattson Road to cross Tī Rākau Drive. Your safety is our priority, please only use pedestrian crossings.
When it’s completed, the Eastern Busway will provide transport options for people to get to more places, more frequently. Thank you for your patience while the busway is built.
Further information about the Eastern Busway project is at easternbusway.nz.... You’re also welcome to contact our Customer and Community team on info@easternbusway.nz or call 0800 287 929.
Kind regards
Eastern Busway Team “

The law requires retailers to sell toys that are safe, but here are Six Safety Checks you can do yourself before you buy a toy and that can make all the difference for your tamariki:
🖍Size – big enough not to choke
🖍Surface – smooth edges, no cracks or jagged bits, no sharp bits
🖍 Strings – not too long
🖍 Supervision – some toys need you there
🖍 Sound – not too loud for little ears
🖍 Specs – Check the packaging for information on hazards, small parts and the right age range for tamariki.
Safer toys = safer tamariki. Easy as!

For a moment, I felt my own body tense — embarrassed, frustrated, helpless.
Then I took a deep breath. 🌬️
I knelt down and whispered, “You’re safe. I can see you’re really upset.”
He kept crying… but softer. His little body started to melt in my arms.
In that moment, I realised: he wasn’t trying to make a scene — he was overwhelmed.
And what he needed most wasn’t control or correction — it was connection. 🤍
Later, we talked about it. We named the feelings, and he told me, “I was mad because I really wanted that blue one.” Simple words, but powerful honesty.
Parenting isn’t about perfection. It’s about staying calm enough to show our children what safety feels like — even when the world is watching. 🌱

🌸 We enjoyed a shared lunch with quite a pink theme! The baking quiz wasn't as easy as some thought with the question about Snickerdoodle biscuits catching people out. But we had fun. 🙂 Many thanks to the Social Team for making sure it was an occasion to remember. 👏
Grateful thanks to our sponsors and supporters and a big shoutout to freshchoicehalfmoonbay for donating a very generous hamper for the occasion.
We would also like to thank Carolyn Bruce Designs - Statement Jewelry for donating some of her gorgeous work for our fundraiser. 💕
We were thrilled to raise $1183. 🙏
