Protect Yourself When Buying a Vehicle Privately
If you buy a vehicle privately, you are not protected by the Consumer Guarantees Act or the Fair-Trading Act.
đSome simple things you can do to reduce your risk when you buy a used vehicle in a private sale are to check:
đwhether the vehicle is subject to a safety related recall
đthat the vehicle has a current Warrant of Fitness
đthat the vehicle registration is up to date
đwhether the vehicle is stolen or has any money owing on it
Itâs also a good idea to get a thorough mechanical check of the vehicle. Most garages provide a pre-purchase inspection service.
