Gathering shellfish in Auckland's Cockle Bay is no longer permitted, as a year-round ban on collection comes into force tomorrow.

Fisheries New Zealand enforced the closure after research showed a significant drop in the number of large cockle in the area.

In a statement, Fisheries New Zealand's manager inshore fisheries north, Jacob Hore, said that this ban was in place to help the population recover and will be reviewed after a period of three years.

"We use the best available science and information to determine if changes are required to management settings to ensure our fisheries remain sustainable. This information, along with feedback through public consultation, shaped our advice to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries on his decision to implement a full year-round closure at Cockle Bay/Tuwakamana," he said.

What you need to know:

- There is a ban on gathering any intertidal shellfish including cockles, green lipped mussels, oysters, crabs, limpets, starfish, periwinkles, whelks, barnacles, and snails.
- Signs have been updated and fisheries officers will be regularly patrolling the area.
- The closure will be reviewed after three years.

Fisheries NZ is encouraging beach-goers who see any suspicious activity to report it to 0800 4 POACHER (0800 47 62 24)

Hi Auckland,

What are your water-saving hacks?

Water restrictions for the city are to remain in place until August, and similar bans on water use may return next summer.

Watercare is set to ask council to remove restrictions on outdoor water use, if rain forecasts, the state of the region’s storage lakes, and a new supply boost all eventuate as hoped.

Watercare said Aucklanders had significantly cut water use, and the biggest supply boost – another 50 million litres a day from the Waikato River – should be available from August.

Presently, Auckland's dams are 51.4 per cent full compared with an average of 76.6, and Auckland's water usage is more than 10 per cent lower than Watercare had estimated.

Undercover boss: Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran lends a hand on Tasman travel bubble flights

The airline's CEO Greg Foran was onboard returning from a brief trip to Sydney and spent much of the flight serving food and drink to the passengers of the A321 flight, most of the passengers onboard seemingly unaware of who the additional crew member was. There were approximately 200 passengers onboard the flight which departed Sydney at 7pm local time, arriving in Auckland ahead of schedule just before midnight. One crew member who spoke during the flight said Foran had made a habit of being "hands-on" when flying, and the CEO had helped serve dinners on two other flights the crew member had worked on saying the bosses actions were "not for show and very much the real deal." While most of the ride was smooth, things did get a bit more turbulent when the meal service got to the back of the aircraft and only one of the three food options was left for those in the last few rows. One passenger seemingly unimpressed with the situation shared his disappointment with Foran, however, it wasn't clear if the passenger was aware his complaint was going right to the top. Foran had earlier met with ground staff at Sydney Airport including those at the airline's lounge where he spoke to members of staff for around an hour.

Auckland's Kelly Tarlton's is backing penguins living in the wild.

The aquarium has given $3000 to three non-profit organisations that support penguin conservation, to mark Sunday's World Penguin Day.

During the past year, keepers have been creating art- with the help of the King and Gentoo penguins- and selling their wares in the aquarium shop.

The team collected black pebbles previously used by Gentoo penguins to make nests to create miniature works of art.

They used the birds' discarded tail feathers as paintbrushes.

Even the penguins contributed to the cause by waddling through a puddle of non-toxic paint and strategically placed cardboard.

Staff then framed their paintings for sale.

Funds raised through the aquarium's penguin art project will be given to Wildlife Hospital, Penguin Rescue and NZ Bird Rescue Charitable Trust, which work to protect New Zealand's penguin populations.

"Our team is passionate about penguins and we’ve had so much fun creating our art over the last year," said penguin keeper Kristen Buckley.

"It's awesome to be able to raise awareness about the problems New Zealand's wild penguins are facing and doing it in a fun way."

The King and Gentoo penguins at the aquarium were ambassadors for their species, she said, inspiring visitors to learn more about them and find out how they can protect them in the wild.
