Hi Auckland,

Would you be put off by a health warning at your favourite swimming spot?

Around 100 popular swimming locations across the country have been slapped with health warnings for the summer season.

Local councils reported long-term poor water quality due to the presence of algal blooms and high concentrations of sediment in popular swimming spots like Lake Rotorua, Waikanae Beach and Paraparaumu Beach. Other sites have had consistently scored so low that local councils have stopped monitoring them and have instead posted long-term warning signs against swimming there.

Swimmers that ignore signs risk gastrointestinal illnesses and respiratory diseases from water made unsafe by farm runoff, sewage contamination and high bacteria counts.

Auckland revellers can catch the bus home for free after toasting Christmas with a few drinks next weekend.

Auckland Transport is offering party goers and Christmas shoppers free public transport to get home on December 18 and December 19.

From 4pm next Friday, you can take the train, bus and some ferries to get home safely from your festivities as part of AT's Home Free promotion.

Auckland Transport’s Group Manager Metro Services, Stacey van der Putten said Home Free has been extended this year to cover all day next Saturday.

“It’s been a tough year for many businesses so this gives Aucklanders an ideal opportunity to use public transport to complete their Christmas shopping and to come into the city to enjoy the yachting," van der Putten said.

Excluded from the Home Free scheme are Waiheke ferries, tourist and car ferries and Skybus.

Devonport ferries are excluded from the offer on December 19.

Nine new police dog teams have graduated from their training.

Auckland senior constable Dave Templeton still relishes his role after 35 years as a dog handler.

Templeton graduated with Costa, the eight dog he has worked.

Five of the seven patrol dog handlers graduated with their first operational dog.

The canine line-up included F litter siblings – sisters Frankie and Fi – along with brother Faze.

Senior Constable Dave Robison, Whakatane, and Sergeant Bruce McLeod, Northland, added to their skillset, graduating with labradors trained to detect drugs, cash and firearms.

Acting assistant commissioner Mike Johnson said dogs are an integral part of policing.

“While our dogs are often the first to go towards danger, their handlers are not far behind because one doesn’t operate without the other.”

Waka Kotahi and Police are urging drivers to take extra care with a surge in trucks heading down state highway one.

More heavy vehicles will be rolling between Auckland and Northport for a week from Friday.

About 800 extra trucks are expected to hit the area as they carry 1200 containers from Northport to Auckland.

The receptacles hail from the ship Constantinos P which was diverted to Northport after delays unloading Christmas cargo in Auckland.

Motorists can expect to see up to 12 trucks every hour leaving Northport from 6 am to midnight for a week.

The Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency says people should plan ahead and allow more time for their journey.
