Asked how she feels about being made a dame, Dr Juliet Gerrard is somewhat lost for words, an unfamiliar position for the woman whose job is distilling the most up-to-date scientific information for those making the decisions that will shape our future.

Gerrard, currently Jacinda Ardern’s chief science advisor, has been named a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year Honours.

While she hasn’t really processed what it means on a personal level, it hasn’t stopped the Freemans Bay resident from sharing the news with her 75-year-old mum in the United Kingdom, who got a kick out of getting the good news on her birthday.

A physicist who played a major role in the nation’s Covid-19 response has been appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year Honours.

Grey Lynn resident Shaun Hendy used his expertise in the science of complex systems to map out how the virus could spread across the country under various scenarios.

His models revealed the severity of the threat and influenced the government’s decision to “go hard and go early” in its response.

“It has been a very difficult year, but in the end it has been very satisfying to have played a role in helping New Zealand get through this pandemic."

Hi neighbours. We're still being asked to conserve water after one of the driest years on record.

Following a dry 2019, the region saw a record 40 days with no rain in January and February, paving the way for water restrictions that would continue into December.

Despite the restrictions and Aucklanders being the most efficient water users in New Zealand, the dam levels are still low and Watercare is asking everyone to try and save 20 litres per day.

We’ve put together a list of easy ways you can save water around your home, as well as a few ideas for if you’re willing to go the extra mile.

Auckland Zoo staff have joined Matuku Link colleagues to scour for the elusive puweto.

Puweto, or the small dark coloured rails, live in freshwater wetlands scattered throughout the country, with their largest populations in the North Island.

The Matuku Link is a 37 hectare native forest block in west Auckland's Bethell's Valley.

The reserve connects many protected areas including Ark in the Park, Habitat Te Henga, Forrest Ridge and Matuku Reserve.

Staff from the zoo and Matuku Link joined volunteers to search for the birds in Bethells wetlands.

The presence of small dark coloured rails in a particular wetland signals the overall health of the ecosystem.

But more than 90 per cent of New Zealand's wetland areas have been drained and cleared for agriculture which has yielded a major impact on all species.

Puweto need vegetation such as raupo and kuta in which to forage and nest.

Surveyors used a recorded sound of the birds' calls to aid monitoring.

They saw two puweto and netted 13 call responses at 38 listening posts.

Singer Courtney Love has made startling claims about the resources available to wealthy people as the deadly coronavirus pandemic continues to spread globally.
The 56-year-old London-based former Hole frontwoman, worth an estimated $130 million, posted a photo of a Covid test unlike any most of her followers would've ever had, explaining that she was sharing it "because I've never been great at this 1 percenter s***."
Love explained the at-home Covid test kits tested for the virus and for antibodies. She continued by pointing out that testing is more important than ever, given London's new "mutant strain" of coronavirus that's reported to be 70 per cent more infectious.
