Great Kererū Count

Richard Herbert from Friends of Tawa Bush Reserves Inc.

The 2018 Great Kererū Count has stareted and runs till the 30th September. We’d love it if you report any kererū that you see in Tawa!

The Great Kererū Count is an annual nationwide collaboration between WWF-New Zealand, Wellington City Council, Victoria University of Wellington and Kererū Discovery.

It’s such a simple and fun way to support New Zealand’s native birds – just step outdoors and look around you!

From the 23nd of September to September 2018, it’s time to count the New Zealand native pigeon - also known as the kererū.

From the depths of the bush to local gardens and parks, keep an eye on the sky as you make the most of the great outdoors over coming week.

Did you know that kererū are called the ‘gardeners of the skies’? It’s because they spread the seeds of native fruit trees. They play an important role in New Zealand’s unique ecosystem. Watch this short film to find out more about these unique birds.

You can report sightings on www.greatkererucount.nz...
Scientists will use data from the Great Kererū Count to build a more accurate picture of bird numbers, distribution and behaviours. This will help us understand how best to protect them.

Make sure you let your friends and whānau know about the count on social media using the #GreatKereruCount hashtag too.

Happy spotting!
