Te Whare Tane - House For Men

Ron Vink from 4 A Better City

Te Whare Tane Charitable Trust is a non-profit organisation which has been set up in the Hutt Valley, to provide a service where men are supported in their journey to live free of family violence. The Trust is working in collaboration with the Upper and Lower Hutt City Councils, NZ Police, Ōrongomai and Kokiri Maraes, White Ribbon, the Network for a Violence Free Hutt Valley plus several individuals from the community. The aim of the project is to offer men who have been violent at home, a wrap-around support service, which they can get referred to by the Police or through self-referral. Services provided will seek to offer a holistic approach including specialised counselling and advice, peer mentoring, education, emergency facilities, mental and physical support. The service offers intervention prior to men entering the justice system, which will of course cost our community a lot less over the long term. This grant is very much needed to help fund venue costs, staffing and the running of the preventative programs.
