Today we had fun making a big puddle in the sandpit. After initially digging a hole we had lots of helpers to help fill it with water. Due to growing interest in the activity the hole needed to be made bigger to accommodate more children at once. Problem solving at its best followed by lots of negotiation as the children took turns having fun in our man made puddle. Learning is everywhere!

The children learnt about different emergency services, their roles, the special clothing worn by ambulance crew, what it looks like inside an ambulance, the equipment children may interact with in an emergency and what we need to do in an emergency.

The children got the opportunity to see some real oxygen equipment, try on some ambulance clothing, support an injury and practice putting on bandages. It was a fun morning for everyone and we all learnt so much - thank you St John's Ambulance!

At kindergarten we place high value on the importance of physically active outdoor play and exploration so with this in mind we have invested in some wet weather overalls, rain jackets and gumboots so that children have the opportunity to explore in the outdoors all day irrespective of the weather.

Today the children were initially puzzled as we encouraged their play in the rain and when the rain became heavy their automatic reaction was to run for shelter but it didn't take long for them to embrace this new play opportunity. As the day progressed the children eagerly awaited the rainfall and were thrilled as the puddles grew deeper. The children's songs changed from "rain, rain go away" to "rain, rain come back and play" as the showers came and went.

We are looking forward to more active exploration in the outdoors all day, every day at kindergarten!

This week, this message was reinforced by the Ministry or Education in a letter to all early childhood providers so we would like to reach out to our community and encourage families with younger children to review the following Ministry of Health publication www.health.govt.nz....

We believe that this publication is a valuable tool for parents and caregivers. It contains important information about foods more commonly associated with choking incidents for children along with ways of reducing this risk. Please read it and share it with your own family and friends and keep your precious children safe.

Over the last few weeks autumn has been evident at kindergarten with the loss of the autumn leaves on our kindergarten trees. This morning the pile of leaves was particularly large after the weekend and particularly tempting!

Various groups of children enjoyed gathering and tossing the large piles into the air, enjoying the sprinkle effect on their faces as the petite leaves fell back down. This spontaneous exploration of the seasons was contagious and had most children engaged for quite some time. During this activity children have the opportunity to actively explore with all of their senses as well as investigate theories around trajectory, gravity, coordination and cause and effect. When the fun was drawing to a close we encouraged the children to participate in the tidy up and take responsibility for their play space which they happily did.

We hope our community is enjoying autumn as much at we are!

This adjustment is an exciting new beginning for children and their families. Effective transitions are critical to the development of children’s self-worth, confidence and resilience and ongoing success at school.

At Little Treehouse Kindergarten one of the things that we do to support our children's transition to school is to spend time with them in a school classroom as part of our Wise Owls ready for school programme. Through building a relationship with a local school we have the opportunity for teachers and children to spend time in a new entrant classrooms, participating in class activities, exploring the classroom, asking questions and talking about what is the same and what is different about school and kindy. Upon returning to kindy the children share their experience with their friends with the support of lots of photos. We feel that this helps to build children's knowledge of the expectations of the school environment and therefore confidence in their individual transition to school.

‘Learning to deal with transitions is part of life. Children need support to learn how to manage change and to build resilience. Teachers can help children develop a positive attitude to change by encouraging their sense of self-worth, confidence as a learner, independence and optimism.’ ERO Continuity of Learning: Transitions from early childhood services to schools.
