"Last summer we had a mallard couple that regularly visited us. They would waddle up the drive way, the female in the lead, and come around the back to the kitchen door to see if we had any rice or other tasty bits. I often wonder what happened to them, and how they negotiated the roads, and wondered how word got around in the first place that we might be the local soup kitchen. Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
