A team of keen young Petone rugby league players will forfeit their points and risk disqualifying themselves in an upcoming tournament because one of their star players is banned.
The reason? She’s a girl. Aayla Toman, 13, has been told she’s not allowed to play in the u13 boys’ grade in Wellington’s Pacific Youth Cup because of her gender – something that led her club team, the u13 Petone Panthers, to play her ‘illegally’ all season.
New Zealand Rugby League rules state the maximum age for males and females to play in mixed gender full contact rugby league is 12 years of age.

Yes, another one… but this one is special: it’s a falls prevention exercise class for seniors, and it only costs a gold coin. Age Concern Wellington’s Ann Dalziel has started three new weekly classes in Lower Hutt (Knox Church), Khandallah (St Barnabas Church), and Churton Park (community centre). Age Concern Wellington now has 25 Steady as You Go exercise classes running each week around the Wellington Region. From Upper Hutt to Island Bay and over to Whitby, there’s a class near you.

“My balance has improved so much,” says one class participant, “and I’ve made many new friends here.”

These classes are designed to improve strength and balance and help prevent a fall. Steady as You Go classes improve balance and leg strength, flexibility, general fitness, and wellbeing. But most importantly perhaps, these classes are a great way to meet new people.

Classes consist of a combination of sitting, standing and walking exercises, and take around an hour. Call 04 499 6648 or visit www.ageconcernwellington.org.nz... for more information.

Falls are not a natural part of ageing!

Mimi is still missing - she went missing from Dawson St, Berhampore, Wellington. I had her for two weeks after my mum died and she managed to escape on Oct 1st - 18 days ago. Someone must have seen her.

Please keep searching in Berhampore/Newtown area - Dawson St, Rintoul St, Lavaud St, Russell Tce, Edinburgh Tce, Adelaide Road area. Further over on Duppa St side and even on way to Kilbirnie. Mum lived in Maupuia, so she might be trying to get back there.

I'm extremely worried about her as she doesn't know the area at all. Please, any news is news.

Mimi is a very small white cat, with large tabby spots on her. She has a heart shape on her nose. She will be very timid and scared. She could be hiding under someone's house or in a garage. She doesn't have a collar on because it was rubbing on her neck. She has a bald patch under her neck. She is not a stray, so if you are (kindly) feeding her, please let me know.

We miss her so much. She is a part of my mum. If anyone sees her, please call me on 0212126838.

One of the great things we love about the beautiful city of Wellington is the melting pot of cultures in our community.

We are so lucky to be able to learn and experience different languages, foods, ideas, dances, and music. We are fortunate that our Greta Point families are happy to share these experiences with us too!

Over the coming weeks we are celebrating our Samoan Aīga (family) and Tamaiti (children) in the center. Nardia has been singing Samoan’s songs to the tamaiti and Jo has been creating magic in the kitchen with Samoan Masi (biscuits).

The mix is quite wet, and we reduced the sugar and increased the cooking time – they have a texture similar to shortbread but a taste similar to Krispy biscuits – and were a BIG hit with the tamaiti and faiaoga (teachers). (I might have sampled a few just to make sure they were up to scratch!). Attached is the recipe for you to try at home.

Happy Cooking!
