Domestic censorship in New Zealand 1914 to 1920
Hear from archivist and historian Jared Davidson, who has just published Dead Letters: Censorship and Subversion in New Zealand 1914-1920 (Otago University Press), revealing the impact of domestic censorship on the lives of radicals, writers, and everyday people during wartime and beyond.
'Haiku' film documentaries about the Great War
Then enjoy a selection of films from Anna Cottrell’s TV series Great War Stories, which reveal moving personal stories in letters and diaries, including some that escaped the censors.
Great War Stories consist of five TV series of short personal stories told through letters and diaries, many held in the ATL, some from whānau.
Among eight ‘haiku’ documentaries are Leonard Hart’s harrowing letter about the horrors of Passchendaele that evaded the censors; and Te Puea’s refusal to send her men to fight ‘white men’s wars’.
Another victim of the State was young Victor Spencer, shot at dawn for desertion in spite of his letter pleading poor mental health.
After reading a family diary Gareth Farr, composer, wrote a cello concerto for three relatives killed on the Western Front. Katherine Mansfield writes movingly about the death of her brother Leslie Beauchamp
About the speakers
An archivist by day and labour historian by night, Jared Davidson is an award-winning writer based in Wellington, New Zealand. Through social biography and history from below, Jared explores the lives of people often overlooked by traditional histories — from working-class radicals of the early twentieth century to prison convicts of the nineteenth.
Anna Cottrell’s been making documentaries for over 25 years. She hunts out people with a good story who face life’s challenges with courage and humour. Examples of this include her documentaries Wahine Disaster, 50 Years On (2018) and The Kiwi the Knight and the Qashqai (2018

Wellington United started the 2019 Ultra Central League on Saturday with a completely new team after the ending of the Joint Venture with the Wellington Phoenix. Key to the rebuild is the singing of the midfield trio of Manyumow Achol, Owen Smith & Cam Burrell.
Manyumow (Manny) Achol arrives at United from Lower Hutt City where he made six appearances last season, before that he was at Wellington Olympic for two seasons where he made 32 appearances and scored 5 goals for their Central League and Capital Premier teams. Manny is described by United coach, Rapha Christians, as one of the most exciting U20 prospects in the country and he doesn’t believe we have seen everything he can do yet. Manny says he came to United to help the club and coach Rapha out, “Rapha is a really good guy and is organising a few things for me so it would only be fair to do something for him in return”. Manny knows that building a team from scratch means it won’t be an easy season for United, but he committed to the club early when there weren’t many others around and says “it’s been great to see the United team grow each training and numbers getting bigger, which is great for the team and club”
Cam Burrell and Owen Smith both originally hail from Taranaki. Cam, a NZ Secondary Schools rep who spent time at Hamilton Wanderers last season is looking forward to the opportunity to play Central League for Wellington United saying “I’m looking forward to testing myself and helping United achieve a respectable position in the league”
Owen Smith played 17 games and scored 2 goals for United last season when he was a member of the Phoenix Academy. He also played 12 National Youth League and 20 National League games for the Phoenix. He said “I’m looking forward to playing in a new environment for Wellington United and can’t wait for the season to start”

Wellington United Diamond's game against Petone in the Kelly Cup Bowl on Saturday saw Sarah Alder make her 100th appearance for the club in a comfortable 2-0 win. We have playing records for our family of clubs since 1968 and Sarah joins the likes of Jeff Strom, Malcolm Dunford, Billy Harris & John Barry and around 40 others who have made a century of appearances. Sarah is only the second women to achieve this feat, the other being current Women's club captain Sandy Cumpstone.
Sarah started playing football when she was just 6 years old, when a friend asked if she would play in his team. She played in juniors at Waterside Karori and Onslow before joining Wellington United in 2012. Having several friends already at the club and knowing the coach, Guillermo Schiltenwolf helped make her decision, while the year on year progress and improvement and the general family vibe of the club has kept her here.
Diamonds coach, Guille says "Seeing a player like Sarah reaching her 100th game for the club makes me absolutely happy and proud. She is one of the 6-7 players that trusted on us back in 2012, she is one of the main pillars of this team. She understand what a family is, what it does really means. What it means to be loyal to our family thank you Sarah for everything you have done and keep doing for the team-for another 100 games"
Sarah originally was a striker but in 2016 Guille moved her into the Left Back position and she set about making it her own. It was the season she says she really felt she came into her own in the team. It is also the season she cites as one of her main highlights as the Diamonds won the Women's Central League for the first time ever. Another highlight was last season's Kate Sheppard Cup quarter final win over Wairarapa United, which they won 3-1 after going down 1-0 and got the club into the semi-final, the furthest they had ever been in that competition. Unfortunately she was unable to play in the semi-final due to being in Kazakhstan representing NZ Universities in her other passion, Futsal.
While many footballers also play Futsal, Sarah has excelled at both, particularly Futsal, being named Capital Football player of the year for Futsal in 2018 and also winning international honours with the MZ Universities and the Futsal Ferns.
Sarah, who has scored 34 goals in her 100 appearances, embodies the team and family atmosphere of the club and is reluctant to single out individual's when asked who are the best she has played with, eventually naming Michaela Robertson, Francesca Grange and new arrival Emma Main among the best and Football Fern Sarah Gregorius as one of the toughest opponents she has faced in her 100 games.
Congratulations on 100 games Sarah, and here's to the next 100
