Direct from a season at London’s Soho Theatre, Circa Theatre and EBKM are delighted to present a limited season of ‘Heartbreak Hotel’.

‘One of the best productions I’ve seen this year.’ ★★★★★ Time Out Melbourne

‘It hijacks your nervous system and fast tracks its way into your soul.’ ★★★★ Scotsman

“A brilliant production which I loved” Suzie Miller, writer of Tony award-winning Prima Facie

Story, science and a synth combine in an exhilarating new play that examines what happens in our bodies when we’re bereft. Featuring Karin McCracken and Simon Leary. Winner Best Play, TimeOut Australia Arts and Culture Awards 2025.

From acclaimed Wellington-based theatre company EBKM, who brought their ground-breaking Gravity & Grace to Circa Theatre last year (Production of the Year, Wellington Theatre Awards 2024), Heartbreak Hotel tracks a woman’s broken heart in a wrenching and relatable journey that’s studded with classic break-up songs and razor-sharp observations on the physiology of love.

Featuring award-winning performances from Karin McCracken (Gravity & Grace, Yes Yes Yes) and Circa Theatre mainstay Simon Leary (Blithe Spirit, Gravity & Grace, Transmission Beta), as well as exquisite direction from Eleanor Bishop (Gravity & Grace, Girls and Boys), Heartbreak Hotel is a hilarious, honest take on a universal human experience.

Heartbreak Hotel comes to Circa Theatre fresh from smash-hit shows at Soho Theatre London, RISING Festival Melbourne, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Destined for international touring in 2026 and beyond, Heartbreak Hotel is only running at Circa for two weeks before the show must move on to other centers. Do not miss this special homecoming – it won’t happen again.

The only mainland Royal Albatross breeding colony in the world can be found at Dunedin's Taiaroa Head. The Albatross are largest (and arguably the prettiest) seabird and is a taonga species to Māori.

Keen to see a fluffy royal albatross live? Head to the Royal Cam - a 24-hour live stream of an albatross nest.

Why the live feed? Well, the royal albatross are slow-breeding birds, and lay only one egg every two years.
Currently the chick in the feed is in its post-guard period, and is left alone. The parents are only returning with food every few days. This little chick will be hitting a milestone really soon - it will finally take their first flight in September! Keep an eye on our little celebrity here.

We hope this link brings a smile!

Sculpting the future of our nation

“Succession meets Barbie” -Showcase Victoria
Edith Aldridge is the youngest woman to be elected leader of her country. In a lush presidential suite, she has just ninety minutes to get ready for the most monumental day of her life. But things are not going to plan. Due to heavy fog, her team is stuck in another city. Enter Rosie, a twenty-two year old makeup artist from the David Jones counter, sent last minute to help Edith get camera ready.

From very different worlds, these two women, though face to face, do not see eye to eye in this provocative, slick and funny play that is “sparkling fresh and urgently of the now”.

The team that brought you PRIMA FACIE, brings you this dynamic new work that “explores the role that makeup and fashion play in how we perceive and receive women in power.” -review quotes from Arts Hub & Australian Arts Review.

Restructure.
A scary word that can make people uneasy—and for good reason. According to The Post, more than a third of New Zealand’s public services have recently faced it.

But why is restructuring the go-to strategy for driving change?

In The Post’s article 'Reaching for change: Is our public service obsessed with restructuring?', doctoral candidate Annika Naschitzki from Victoria University is trying to understand repetitive restructuring.

New Zealand’s public service is often seen as risk-averse, slow-moving, and stuck. But interviewed staff indicate that they want change, that change is needed ... just not through restructuring.

Naschitzki doesn’t mince words: “We always have the same issues, but we keep trying to fix the same problem with the same hammer we've been using for decades.”

Are we leaning too heavily on structural change when real transformation might lie elsewhere? Perhaps through training, resourcing, tools, and practice, as Naschitzki suggests.

What do you think?
Is restructuring the right tool for meaningful change, or just a habit we can’t seem to break?
If you are wary of restructuring, how can we do better?
Tell us your thoughts in the comments!

Petition to include fit-for-purpose walking and cycling facilities in the new Mt Victoria tunnel

I've started a petition on Change.Org:

The current Mt Victoria tunnel, 94 years old, is a vital link between Wellington’s eastern suburbs and the city centre and beyond. It caters primarily for motor traffic. The elevated path for pedestrians and cyclists is extremely narrow, congested, noisy and polluted. Despite this, it’s used by about 1000 walkers and cyclists every weekday. They deserve better!

After decades of delay, the Minister of Transport has promised “spades in the ground” before the end of the current parliamentary term, for a new two-lane Mt Victoria tunnel to run parallel with the existing tunnel. However, there has been no mention of whether this new tunnel will include pedestrian and cycling facilities.

There is therefore an urgent and crucial opportunity to ensure that new, high-quality facilities for walkers and cyclists are included in the new tunnel. This could be achieved by placing a wide pedestrian and cycling path under the traffic lanes, as shown in the sketch shown in the petition. Alternatively, the path could be placed alongside the traffic lanes, separated from the traffic by a wall, or even as a completely separate new tunnel. Whatever the configuration, the new walking and cycling facility needs to be at least 5.5 - 6.0 metres wide, divided into separate two-way walking and cycling lanes, and it must be well lit, well ventilated and CCTV monitored.

Progressive cities, including London, Amsterdam and Copenhagen, have invested heavily in new cycling facilities and have seen these facilities widely adopted. “Mainstreaming” cycling and walking dovetails with efficient public transport, increases mobility and accessibility for the city’s residents, reduces traffic congestion and contributes to the city’s liveability and climate-change goals. Reduced traffic congestion improves the speed and reliability of public transport and increases the efficiency of goods delivery and business servicing.

Please sign the petition to ensure that the new Mt Victoria tunnel includes the greatly-improved walking and cycling facilities that current Wellingtonians, and generations to come, deserve.
