The house is warm and comfortable with ceiling and underfloor insulation. It has solar lighting, gas hot water, cooking and heating. There is also a small inverter for laptops and enough solar power to run a small television. Weekly outgoings are minimal, e.g. around $10 for gas.
Currently located on a lifestyle block in Waikanae, the house has a very pleasant rural outlook, with a sunny aspect and lambs grazing outside. Connected to town water supply. Pharmacist Raewyn Richardson said the incident began at 6pm on Wednesday night when a man collapsed on the footpath.
A number of businesses near the cordon are closed, but are expected to open later in the day. Police are expected to make a statement about the situation later on Thursday.
