Polio once infected 350,000 people annually- world wide.

Thanks to a global effort to eradicate polio, supported by Rotary International and the Bill Gates foundation, and many more, case numbers have reduced by 99.9% and 229 countries are now polio free.

Many older New Zealand may recall that schools once upon a time closed due to a Polio outbreak or had some on their family affected by Polio.
New Zealand’s last polio case was in 1977!

All these efforts led to Only 36 cases reported in 2025 in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the last 2 countries where polio still occurs.

Yet, COVID has reduced vaccination efforts globally and several countries have been recategorised as high risk.
We’re almost there! Let’s help us to get rid of it for good.

There’s lots of ways you can help!

You could join us at the Annual Bacon Buttie Stand!

A dangerous tree

Pine trees are shallow rooted with a ball of roots holding them in the ground. The ground just along from this pine tree has collapsed in several places already and I fear for any pedestrians or drivers under this tree when rain and wind attack it until it falls.

Poll: Yay or nay to tourist fees? 🌏💰

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

Kiwis love tourism ... it brings in cash and connection. But with more visitors comes more pressure on our beautiful places, housing, and local infrastructure.

So what’s the fix? Should we bring in a tourism tax or focus on spreading visitors beyond the hotspots to ease the load? 👇

The return of land

Jenny from Titahi Bay

While pleased that Ngati Toa Rangatira have had the land at Whitireia returned, I am appalled that they had to buy it back. The old sad joke comes to mind that the missionaries arrived and the Maori had the land and the missionaries had the Bible; the missionaries said, let us pray and when the Maori opened their eyes, they had the Bible and the missionaries had the land. Something that appears to have happened all over our country.
If anyone should have been paying the just under five million dollars for the little bit of land, it should have been the Anglican Church before they returned the land to Ngati Toa Rangatira, while apologizing for never building the promised school.
Just one other point, Radio NZ should be ashamed of charging such a huge amount for the land. I can only hope that the amount RNZ will be paying to lease the land under the masts, will be a reflection of the purchase price.
