Our Feathered Friend this week is the red-crowned parakeet/kākāriki.
The photos are from Rosa Marie who took her camera to Zealandia to see one only of the only mainland populations in New Zealand.
Although they are widely distributed throughout the New Zealand region, and are very common on some islands, they are almost entirely absent from the two main islands.
One exception is Wellington, where birds from Zealandia and Matiu/Somes Islands are occasionally seen in suburban gardens.

Kia ora, as part of the development of the Long-term Plan 2021—41 we want to know what matters most to you.

This weeks question is: What matters most as we experience growth across the district?

We will see higher demand across all Council services from an expanding population, and these services must be planned for with extra capacity. The continued growth in key demographics like older persons and young families also have implications for the types of infrastructure and services we will need to plan for in the future.

How do we plan ahead for growth, and the challenges and opportunities that it brings, ensuring Kāpiti continues to be a great place to live. Tell us what matters most to you.

Telling the stories of some of the veterans at rest in Porirua Cemetery has become a lot easier.
Last month the council completed the installation of 16 QRS codes on distinctive red posts in the cemetery, off Kenepuru Dr. Visitors can scan the codes with their smartphone and it takes the user to the council cemeteries website, where they can read a little more about the person buried in that gravesite.
On the council website there is also the option to go to the Porirua War Stories website, run by historian Allan Dodson, which has more comprehensive profiles on each of the veterans.

Porirua City Council has rejected the claims of a group of landowners, including Greater Wellington Regional councillor Chris Kirk-Burnnand, who felt they should have first dibs on the 6000 square metre property at Motukaraka Point, near Pauatahanui Inlet, for just $180,000.
Kirk-Burnnand and five other neighbours believed that was fair market value for a slice of land deemed rural, which they wanted to carve up between the property owners and add to their existing titles.
They called in the lawyers when it became clear the council was considering selling the land on the open market, with its own valuer appraising the land at $600,000.

At the moment we are at watering restriction level 1: routine odds/evens garden watering restrictions. This means we have enough water for residents based on current demand, BUT we need to look after the storage reserves we have, so there is enough water to last all summer.

With increased demand, and hot, dry weather- things could quickly change.

Garden watering restrictions help smooth out peak demands on the network during daylight savings.

So, what can I do to help limit demand? ?
- use mulch in the garden to help lock in water ✅
- use a trigger hose to water plants ?
- soak don't sprinkle - a good soaking twice a week will encourage feeder roots to grow down ?

Know the garden watering restrictions in your area ???
