Sandra Goudie was right to put the heat on Transport Minister Bridges about the spate of recent road closures on State Highway 25. It’s also good to see that there will be a public meeting in Coromandel to discuss the issue.

But we lack any recognition of the underlying cause of recent problems with our roading infrastructure - climate change. Thames Coromandel (plus Raglan area) has 769 km of local roads and 37 km of arterial roads at risk from climate change hazards. Hauraki/Coromandel is the third most at risk area in the country.

Climate change is not some vague issue we can put off for decades. Our District is being impacted badly now. We know the Coast road is fragile. We need to know which other roads and other Council assets are most at risk and where ratepayer spending should be best directed.

This from Lorna Thornber: Growing up, I had a lot of misconceptions about the small towns the family station wagon would splutter through on trips up and down the country.

The "gumboot capital", the "kiwifruit capital", the place with the giant L&P bottle... They're only good for one thing, right?
Turns out I was very wrong.

Top Solutions To Climate Change – Are Surprising (and Big Savers)

While these are all very worthwhile options, – do they stack up as the most effective measures and top priorities? Actually many don’t.

And who would have guessed that refrigerant management would be No 1 and energy such as solar, wind, nuclear, and geothermal would make up only 5 of the top 20 solutions?
