I just wanted to thank all those people who stopped to try to help the young boy on the road in James street.
It was wonderful to see people trying to help him, a lady standing beside him to make him visible to traffic and the gentleman who was flagging down traffic.
Thankyou to the police officers who arrived so quickly after my call and without lights and sirens which i think would have made things worse.
This little man was walking and sitting on the road in the dark, walking in front of cars wearing dark clothes, he wouldn't let anyone help or move him off the road.
It was a very scary moment and i hope the situation was resolved in his best interests.
I love seeing this side of our community ...

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS WITH CAMBRIDGE AUTUMN FESTIVAL'S SHORT STORY COMPETITION

Time to get writing! The Short Story Competition is now open and is the perfect opportunity to test your talents. Our wonderful sponsor is Cambridge's Cooney Insurance. There’s no entry fee and the winner will take home $1000, with second place $500 and third place $250.

Often with writing, coming up with the perfect first sentence is the hardest thing. So this year, organisers have made it easy. All stories must start with the words “There was a knock at the door”. The rest is up to you!

The competition is run by the Cambridge Autumn Festival and attracts entrants from all around the country. Now in its 7th year, this competition has been a great stepping stone for two past winners, Rochelle Elliot (2012 winner) and Tony Chapelle (2015 winner) who have become published authors since winning the competition.

Stories must be no more than 1500 words. Entrants can submit more than one story, but stories must be original and must not have been published before, or entered into another competition.

Entries close 23 February 2018 so writers have all summer to pen their story. The winners will be announced at the awards night during the Autumn Festival. More details about the competition are on the entry form or on Cambridge Autumn Festival website (cambridgeautumnfestival.co.nz).

Want to turn your home into a high-value property? Get professional advice from our free eBook: The three elements of a low maintenance, high-profit property. Here are some simple, easy and quick ways to renovate your home this summer.

1. Wall colours matter
Avoid painting your walls white or black—one will show the dirt and the other any imperfections in your wall or ceiling. Instead, consider using patterned walls.

Wallpaper is becoming fashionable again and can really help your home look fresh.

2. Make the cleaning easier
Does anyone really enjoy vacuuming or cleaning in low, hard to reach places? Why not consider switching out your bathroom essentials for wall-mounted alternatives.

A wall-hung toilet and elevated sink will not only make cleaning easier but can create space and give the bathroom an entirely different context. For the ultimate easy-clean, install a drain in your bathroom floor so you can hose the floor down.

3. Consider changing surface tops
Changing both kitchen and bathroom surface tops are easy ways of giving your house a different feel. However, keep in mind that choosing a single colour will highlight imperfections, dirt and dust. Patterned surfaces are a great way of avoiding this. Natural stone countertops such as granite or quartz are good for this, but these are very heavy materials, so make sure your cabinetry can support the weight!

If you’re after an industrial look, consider stainless steel—it’s practically indestructible. The only downsides are that some chemicals can stain it, and it can dent if something heavy is dropped on it.

Plastic laminate is another long-lasting homeowner favourite, especially for those on a budget. It’s lightweight too so it doesn’t need sturdy support under it like granite or quartz do. However, it can be scratched and sometimes burned if you’re not careful.

4. Change the flooring
If your current floor is covered in furniture scuff marks, stains and claw indents from the family pet, it could be time to consider a more durable option. This could range from bamboo to natural stone or laminate, or vinyl, and while each has their benefits they also have their limitations.

Stone may be a great addition to your kitchen and bathrooms, but be aware that some types of stone, such as marble, will wear quicker than you might expect. Likewise, porcelain and ceramic tiles are a bathroom and kitchen favourite. While they’re not as tough as natural stone, they’re less porous, which makes them quick and easy to clean.

Figures show a 13.6 per cent rate increase in 2018/19, 7 per cent in 19/20 and a 10.7 per cent increase in 20/21.

A household paying $2500 in rates per year will see that figure rise to $3555 ($68 per week) in three year's time and $4448 ($85 per week) in ten year's time.

Do you think the rate rises are too high, or does Tauranga need to splash some cash to future proof the city?
