All non-essential businesses were required to shut their doors once the coronavirus lockdown came into effect, with only supermarkets and pharmacies among the few still trading.
However, the government has made changes to the essential services list, allowing a number of retailers the opportunity to open their doors and sell select products they deemed essential to life in New Zealand. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) announced the changes on Tuesday.

Ardern says "children themselves told us during the consultation on the strategy that going to school hungry was a barrier to their learning."
Education spokeswoman Nikki Kaye says the Government hasn't considered that most schools don't have infrastructure for large scale food preparation and storage. She says "this would cost hundreds of millions and take away the autonomy of parents to provide lunch for their children".

Health Minister Dr David Clark says he expects up to 100 families will benefit from the new service. He says the new pregnancy and parenting service will aim to address issues such as mental health, drug and alcohol addictions and family violence.
Is this an important investment for Whakatane? Should funding be allocated elsewhere? If so, where?

The public have expressed community-led ideas to repair the Mauao track, and the need for the council to just "keep it simple".
Volunteers could simply dig into the slope of the track to allow access around the damaged area, using local builders to remove "less than a truck full of dirt" to allow the track to reopen.
