James Wattie’s ‘Olympic’ Champion!
In 1953, 19-year-old Peter Holden, now a resident at James Wattie Village in Havelock North, took home the inaugural Olympic Cup. This led him to a lifelong legacy of equestrian involvement.
Presented to the New Zealand Showjumper of the Year, the Olympic Cup was a first for New Zealand showjumpers. In 1953 Peter competed and won on his mother’s horse Starlight, and again took home the cup in 1957 aboard Rum.
The now 90-year-old recalls the initial competition, which was originally held in Palmerston North.

New neighbour
Okay folks, if you feed your animals outside, you might want to rethink that. We have new nocturnal neighbours, inside Havelock North.
There is a very well fed brush tail possum up the pōhutukawa tree in my garden.
I don’t know where it’s come in from, but it’s in the middle of a residential neighbourhood, so keep an eye on your pet doors, open windows and doors and pet food.
I’ll be notifying council and DOC tomorrow.
Old woodern chair
Hi does anyone have any old (can be broken) woodern chairs with the spindle back. Or does anyone have any spindles lying around please they would like to get rid of. Many thanks
