Thousands of parents who take 'cheaper' holidays during the school term time need to realise their kids are missing out on school says Secondary Principals' Association president Mike Williams. New research shows more than 36,000 children took a holiday during a single school term last year. Tell us what you think! Would you take your kids out of a school for a holiday? Why/why not? These fruit trees are in the Walter Nash Park in Taita which is getting a major facelift. The park is behind the houses between Reynolds Road and Molesworth Street, down to Tocker Street in the south.
There are entrances in Reynolds Road, Molesworth Street and Tocker Street.Work began this week and includes two new footpaths around the 3.75 hectare park, improvements to the park entrances and removal of overgrown greenery and a disused toilet block.
By springtime you can put a spring in your step and enjoy the paths for jogging, walking, cycling or scooting.

I've just seen a Facebook post in the Marton page,
a person gave her crab apples to a group called 'creative courtyard' they in turn made crab apple jelly (the crossed out part in this picture is her name)
Gave her two jars and shared the rest.
The fruit mentioned above I have these trees in my back yard, i use what I can but don't always make the most of the generous fruit the garden provides.
Would be fantastic if there was a similar set up here, I would freely give off my trees with the hope of having a few jars as payment.
Something to consider.🤔

Can you actively represent the views of those around you to Council?
If you can answer yes or maybe to these questions, it’s time for you to think about showing your interest in joining one of four new Community Panels throughout the city.
The Panels will be made up of five community members and two local elected councillors and will be in the Northern, Western, Central and Eastern wards.
The Community Panels key responsibilities will be:
a) Representation – discuss, debate and provide feedback to Council on all important local issues, city wide matters of significance, Annual Plans and policy setting.
b) Manage a new Local Community Projects fund ($120,000 per triennium for each Panel).
c) Manage the Community Engagement fund.
We are looking for candidates who live in the Ward they seek to represent or alternatively be able to demonstrate clear connections/commitment to that community; and demonstrate an ability to represent their community both in the community and in formal public settings including Council.
Find out more about the selection process and what the Panel responsibilities are with the link below.
You can also get application forms from our Administration Building at 30 Laings Road, online at or at city libraries.
Applications close on 30 June 2017.

"I was suspicious of the establishment at the time. You need to understand, I had grown up a welfare-dependent "half-caste" (I hate that term) boy living with his mother, escaping from a life of alcohol, crime and a level of violence that I would not tolerate for my daughters. An under-achiever, I was expelled from two secondary schools. I feel I had a reason to be angry at "the system".
"Then I became a father. It changed my life. I needed to be a responsible adult caring for a son, then a daughter – eventually seven children. We were young parents and wanted to do only the best for these precious beings.
"I read the pamphlet. It described "studies" in the Netherlands into communities that didn't look like mine, but I took little persuasion. I stated our second child, our little daughter Te Miringa, would not be immunised.
"At the time my wife Tracy was working as a nurse at the local medical centre and immunising children daily. Yet this was my protest against the establishment that I so mistrusted.
"Fifteen months later, we had a scare. Te Miringa became unwell with high fever and a body rash and the doctors were concerned as there was a measles outbreak locally. And I realised the information from the Netherlands did not reflect my reality.
"We got Te Miringa immunised."

At 6pm on a cold, wet Queen's Birthday Monday, traffic near Kmart Petone is backed up in all directions. We had a fair bit of congestion over the weekend and business owners have been frustrated over the traffic levels. Is this the new normal? Were you caught in the traffic and what do you think about it? How do we fix it? Comments may be used in print unless stated otherwise with NFP (Not For Print)
