I would estimate in the last two-three years, the Council has spent five million dollars on upgrading Upper Hutt children's playgrounds. Some of it a hit or miss as to the popularity of some playground items.
But the Council won't spend a dollar on a single small dog playground even though most of the funding for it could be channelled from exorbitant dog registration fees and other exorbitant fees related to dogs.
A small dog playground at Trentham Memorial Park with permanent agility circuit-type implements/obstacles would cost probably only several thousands of dollars. And there are many more people with dogs who visit TMP weekly than there are children and their caregivers visit the TMP children's playground.
Upper Hutt doesn't need a devoted, separate dog park for various reasons and should not entertain such a development but a small playground with permanently installed weather proof tunnels, hurdles, a-frame, bridge, dog walking plank, hoop would be a welcomed fun amenity for some dogs and their handlers. The Christchurch greater area has nine of them.

Approximately 120,000 wheelie bins for rubbish and recycling, and crates for glass are being delivered in stages to just over 40,000 households across the city. Households will also receive their green waste bins if they chose this service.
Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says this is an exciting milestone for the upgraded service, which will ultimately bring Lower Hutt’s rubbish and recycling kerbside service into the 21st century.

The lengthy Wallacevile Estate pedestrian and bike lane which links the entire Estate and The Reserve with upper Upper Hutt including the Wallaceville Railway Station and city CBD is in tatters. There is no lighting whatsoever and the "new" lane is still just a mass of dirt and weeds … View moreThe lengthy Wallacevile Estate pedestrian and bike lane which links the entire Estate and The Reserve with upper Upper Hutt including the Wallaceville Railway Station and city CBD is in tatters. There is no lighting whatsoever and the "new" lane is still just a mass of dirt and weeds and puddles in the wet.
The old lane is little better and has also no lighting and is due to be entirely replaced with it being part of the 200 new apartmental houses of the development..
Either lane gets a lot of use from commuters walking to and from the Wallaceville rail station at all hours of the day and night, from school kids, and from people for all sorts of reasons throughout the day and night.
This is a disgrace for a large new expensive housing development still less than half completed after over two years. Council should of course get the developers to do what they are meant to do as a pedestrian lane was always part of the development and its approval.
Currently and for at least a year the inadequacies and danger of the pedestrian and bike lane has been a stark reality.
