Some business owners are surprised to learn they need a licence to play music at their workplace.
When you buy music, you buy the rights to use that music in a domestic setting – at home, in your car, and at a private party.
But as soon as music is taken out of a domestic setting and played in a business (cafes, bars, shops, offices, gyms and hairdressers), this is considered a “public performance” under the Copyright Act (1994).
One Music exists to simplify music licensing for New Zealand businesses. One licence grants a business the legal permission they need to use music.
