A predator revealed: Childcare centre staff member molested girl in his care

Greg Van de Worp posed with children at the Pukete Neighbourhood House for a Stuff news story in 2015.
A staff member at a Hamilton childcare facility was caught by a colleague in the act of molesting a young girl he was supposed to be looking after.

Gregory William Van de Worp, 34, was sentenced to 16 months and two weeks in prison when he appeared in the Hamilton District Court on July 30 after earlier pleading guilty to a single charge of indecent assault on a child.

That assault on the girl, who was aged under 12 at the time, happened earlier this year at Pukete Neighbourhood House. The date of the assault and the precise age of the girl cannot be reported in order to protect her identity.
Van de Worp's actions have also raised questions by some parents about how centre management responded to what happened, and whether they were adequately informed.

Before the assault happened, Van de Worp had been employed for 13 years at the facility, which provides before- and after-school care as well as holiday programmes for children. That morning Van de Worp took the girl alone into a room. He sat on a chair with the girl on his lap and began rubbing her genitals over the top of her clothing with his hand.

Pukete Neighbourhood House is based in a building known as the Sportsdrome.
It was then that another staff member walked into the room and saw what was happening.

As Judge Merelina Burnett noted, Van de Worp's actions were clearly planned and pre-meditated.
She had a victim statement from the girl's family in which they spoke of their grief and guilt.

"Here are loving and responsible parents who have placed their child in what should be a safe place. They have employed people who they think are safe people to look after their child, and nevertheless their child has been subject to your conduct."

The family's angst would likely never abate, she said.
"Was this the only occasion that it happened? The victim's family refer to little items that the child brought home, gifts from you. Was this grooming on your part, or was it rewards? In other words, had this happened before and these items were rewards, or was it grooming leading up to something that commenced on this particular day?

"I do not suppose the parents will ever know, but they will have a lifetime of anxiety over it."

The centre's management committee also penned and supplied a victim statement to the court that castigated Van de Worp for jeopardising the business's reputation and, potentially, future funding.

"The emotional toll you have placed on workplace relationships, the future of male colleagues working in the childcare industry, the community confidence, these have to be questioned and you need to personally scrutinise the vast impact of your actions," the statement read.

"Your work colleagues, friends, the parent rapport built up over time has been compromised and tarnished. You have betrayed our trust - we thought we had a loyal trustworthy employee. Sadly, Greg, we will never know the extent of what you have done to the innocent children and their families or the damage to their futures, when they were entrusted in our care."

In addition to Van de Worp's custodial sentence, Judge Burnett ordered Van de Worp to pay $3000 in reparation to his victim's family.

Stuff was informed of Van der Worp's case by a parent who was concerned the Hamilton community might not be aware of his offending. The parent, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was particularly worried that only the families whose children took part in before- and after-school programmes had been informed, and not those who enrolled their offspring in the school holiday programmes the business offers.

"He is a creep ... how much of this is swept under the carpet?"

Pukete Neighbourhood House manager Jane Wood said parents and caregivers of children enrolled at the centre had been informed about Van de Worp on two occasions via emails sent out through their database.

"We did our very best to notify parents. I have spoken to a number of people, although we have since received a complaint. They were given police and Oranga Tamariki contacts they could call and talk to."

Van de Worp was the "programmes manager" at the centre and the incident had been quickly reported to the police. When he was confronted about what he had done, he resigned immediately, Wood said.

He and the other staff members had been regularly vetted by the police under the auspices of the Vulnerable Children's Act and the last time Van de Worp was vetted had happened was in August last year.
