We’re heading into winter, and with households self-isolating together, there’ll be more cooking at home, and more use of open fires, heaters, and dryers - all things which can increase fire risk.
New Zealanders can be confident that Fire and Emergency is well-prepared and ready to respond to emergencies as usual during the nationwide self- isolation period.
Please call 111 if you have a fire, we will ask you whether anyone at the address is self-isolating or has a confirmed case of COVID-19. Where this is the case, we already have necessary measures in place to ensure everyone’s safety including protective clothing, gloves, masks, safety glasses and mask.
Panic buying of items won’t protect you against coronavirus. Doing this only puts unnecessary pressure on our supermarkets and on our most vulnerable who cannot afford to stockpile.

. Please remember not everyone has the internet so, let your friends and neighbours know if they do not have the internet.
In line with the level 4 restrictions from the government, Refuse Transfer Stations are closed. We will have pop up rubbish disposal sites for rural residents, those who don’t receive kerbside collections, and anyone with too much rubbish for their wheelie bin. You can dispose of rubbish in official Council bags between 9am-3.30pm on the following days at these sites:
Te Aroha
April 2 and 17
In front of the Te Aroha Domain on Whitaker St (opposite Countdown)
Matamata
April 3 and 18 Hetana Street, alongside the public toilets
Morrinsville
April 10 and 24
Countdown carpark (off Moorhouse or Studholme Street
Glass recycling
You can also recycle glass at these locations (kindly funded by the Glass Packaging Forum). These sites will be staffed, with strict controls around contact and disposal to keep our communities, staff and contractors safe.

All non-essential businesses were required to shut their doors once the coronavirus lockdown came into effect, with only supermarkets and pharmacies among the few still trading.
However, the government has made changes to the essential services list, allowing a number of retailers the opportunity to open their doors and sell select products they deemed essential to life in New Zealand. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) announced the changes on Tuesday.
Here's a link with an update of which shops will be open for the remainder of lockdown and what you can purchase from them.

Red Cross is operating a shopping service for vulnerable people. The testing criteria has changed considerably, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern yesterday said the criteria for testing had been widened to include people with Covid-19 symptoms but not necessarily a history of travel, or exposure to another case. The labs have a capacity for 3700 tests per day, there are two more labs gearing up to provide tests as well looking up to 5000 tests per day. If in doubt call your medical centre.

Freephone 0800 800 405 was set up by the Waikato Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group for people struggling to get food, groceries, medication or other household goods and services.
The group is not yet sure how big the need is, and say the 0800 number doesn't replace other Government helplines.
