Karen here from Environment Network Manawatu.

This week, Ashhurst Community Garden has its usual weekly working bee; in Foxton, there is a regular weeding bee and plastic bag recycling craft workshop on Friday. Saturday there's the regular car boot sale raising money for the Wildlife Foxton Trust. Ashhurst Community Market happens on Saturday (Christmas parade too!), and in Feilding, the Sharing Garden have their regular working bee. On Sunday, Timona Park Orchard, Apollo Butterfly Park and A Rocha nursery have their monthly working bees.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
