Land in Akaroa’s inner harbour looks set to be used for a $63 million irrigation scheme to discharge treated wastewater.

A hearings panel has recommended Christchurch City Council go ahead with a plan to plant 40 hectares of native trees in Robinsons Bay and Takamatua and use treated wastewater stored in two new large storage ponds to irrigate them.

The council will consider the recommendation and make a final decision in December.

Akaroa’s wastewater is currently sent into the harbour via a 100 metre pipe, but the practice is considered “culturally repugnant” by Ngāi Tahu and about five years ago Environment Canterbury refused to grant the council another long-term consent.

Almost 1500 Christchurch households could soon have their recycling bins confiscated as the city council cracks down on people who refuse to separate their waste.

About 180 yellow wheelie bins have already been removed and the council has sent final warnings to another 1450 residents.

To get the bins back, they will have to pay $97.65 and sign a statement promising to abide by the rules. Their bins will be monitored to make sure they keep that promise.

Christchurch City Council has spent close to $1.5 million sending almost 1500 truckloads of contaminated material from yellow bins to landfill since May. That equates to about 41 per cent of all yellow bins.

Do you agree with council's strict recycling approach? Let us know below.

The council is set to reduce the number of signal poles to six as part of its long-term plan for revitalising High St between Cashel, St Asaph and Manchester streets, and extending the street's tram route.

About $6.7m has been set aside for the High St revamp and about $2.9m for the proposed tram extensions. Read the full story here.
