With the weather warming up and the long weekend just ahead, it’s a good time to check your property is safe and secure.

Take a few minutes to check your doors and windows, and not just throughout your house but also on any garden sheds or garages. If you're going away, have you closed and locked your windows? Are your locks strong and secure?

Make sure any precious outdoor items like BBQs, lawnmowers or tools are protected, and not left out where they could be easily taken.

If you’re working in the garden, make sure your front door and the rest of your property is locked up. It only takes a second for someone to wander in off the street and take the opportunity to steal.

It's also a good idea to check for any weak spots where a thief could gain access into your garden, for example a low or sagging fence, or a back gate with a weak lock. Keep an eye out for your neighbours and their places as well.

Police will continue to work hard to prevent, respond, investigate and resolve burglaries but we can’t do it alone. Thieves will take any opportunity so do your best to keep your house and property safe and secure.
