This positive message is about celebrating what volunteers bring to their communities. It is important to recognise volunteering and the place it has in keeping our communities strong and healthy.

The benefits of being a volunteer are well-documented. There's better health and the feel-good endorphins that volunteering releases; around how volunteering can help with job prospects; and other health benefits such as extending longevity and reducing depression in many people. As poet and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson observed, It is one of the beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely help another without helping himself.

National Volunteer Week is a great opportunity to start volunteering or, if you already volunteer, it's a great time to invite a friend to join you. The positive message for the Week celebrates the joy that volunteers bring to their communities. It also reminds us that volunteers reap the reward of a happier, more engaged life because they feel connected to their communities.

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” — Elizabeth Andrew

I would like to use this opportunity to recognise the huge amount of work done by just over 100 Volunteers for the Christchurch Area Citizens Advice Bureau (3 Branches and 2 satellites). There is extensive training to start with and then they commit to on going training to keep up to date. I am in awe of the service you provide with diligence, care, sympathy and empathy to help anyone who seeks out assistance.

Cheers to the Volunteers

Fire and Emergency New Zealand

Every year, over 11,000 brave men and women keep us safe. Most of them are working full-time jobs. Many are parents or grandparents. All of them are doing their bit to put out fires, save lives and keep the station working.

If you know a fire volunteer, this is your chance to say thanks. … View more

FYI Just had the following from my lawyers newsletter.. Not sure though what happens about/where that leaves botched repairs/re-repairs - suggest you get legal advice

"Limitation: TIME RUNNING OUT ON CLAIMS"

"Last year insurers issued statements about dates on which they would rely on a defence under the Limitation Act(s) that require court proceedings to be brought within 6 years on which a homeowner could first sue otherwise the claim is no longer enforceable. Those dates are fast approaching."

"AA, Vero, FMG, MAS, and the IAG brands agreed not to plead a limitation defence for any residential earthquake damage claim where proceedings are filed in Court before 4 September 2017. Southern Response will not rely on a limitation defence until 4 September 2018. If an insured does not sue before these dates the claim dies. This includes claims that are under cap, but may go over cap post limitation expiry. Insureds ought to prepare to sue now."

"District Court limit now $350,000.00
"

"On 1 March 2017 the District Courts Act 2016 came into effect. The District Court can now accept claims up to $350,000 rather than the previous $200,000.

This will enable many insurance/EQC earthquake claims to be filed in the District Court with its cheaper filing fee ($200 vs $1350). The District Court also operates a fast track for earthquake claims shortening time frames for events"

Christchurch’s budding young artists and designers are being given the opportunity to create a unique public art work for Hagley Park.

As part of its Re:ACTIVATE programme SCAPE Public Art is on the hunt for young creatives who want to stamp their mark on Christchurch by having an art work they designed super-sized and publicly displayed for a six-week season, beginning in October.

Last year seven-year-old George Lewis’ drawing was turned into a 1.9 metre by 1.45 metre artwork, titled Sunbeam and displayed in the Re:Start Mall.

This year the best two art works will be displayed in Hagley Park.

Inland Revenue is warning of several scams circulating this tax season. Inland Revenue revealed earlier this month that there is about $183 million of tax refunds sitting unclaimed – enough to fly first class from Auckland to London and back more than 11,000 times.

Since then the IRD has been alerted to a scam email that asks users to enter their personal details to claim their tax refund. The email has the subject line, "IR3 individual income tax return 2016".

It's important to remember the IRD will not:
- Advise you that you are due a tax refund through email
- Send an email with a link to a webpage which asks you submit personal details
- Ask for credit card details or bank account numbers over the phone in order to process a monetary payment
- Ask you to pay a tax debt using gift cards or vouchers
- Sent you an email that does not include or ask for your IRD number

If you receive a suspicious email, SMS scam message or a fraudulent call please email phishing@ird.govt.nz or call them on 0800 227 774 (make sure you have your IRD number).

Log on to the Inland Revenue's website, register for myIR and use its calculator to work out whether you are owed money or have tax to pay.
