But leaving your home open may increase the risk of break-ins and create an easy way for intruders to gain entry into your home.
Exceed is here to help you with 10 top tips to improve your home security:
1 - Use key-operated locks on doors and windows – and don’t hide spare keys under doormats or in obvious places for burglars to find them easily
2 - Install security screens on all doors to keep your family safe
3 - Install window security stays to increase security, natural safe ventilation and prevent children falling from high windows
4 - Install hinge bolts to stop doors from being lifted out of their frames
5 - Upgrade beads and rubbers to hold any glass in place
6 - Install digital deadlocks so you no longer need to remember your keys when you leave your home and grant short term access to friends or Airbnb guests
7 - If you have an alarm system, make sure it is working properly
8 - Keep plants trimmed around doors and windows and install sensor lights or CCTV cameras
9 - Don’t leave valuable items like keys out in easy view for opportunistic thieves
10 - If you’re going away on holidays, make your home look occupied – leave the TV or radio playing, set lights to come on with a timer and ask a neighbour to collect your mail and take care of bins
Being aware of potential security risks and taking action early is the best way to keep your home and loved ones safe.

Christchurch City Council has approved the project’s procurement plan, which means construction can now go out to tender.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the aim was for construction to begin in early 2021 with the facility opening towards the end of 2022.
“This is very welcome news for the community, who have been campaigning for years to have a facility like this to fill the very real gap in library and recreation services in their corner of town. This new community facility is going to be a good investment in Hornby’s future and will provide work for our local construction sector.”
The council is investing $35.7m into the centre which will be built on the east side of Kyle Park. An early works package will be tendered first, to get the site prepared, starting in early 2021. The main construction work will be tendered separately, and will get underway in midway through next year.
Architectural firm Warren and Mahoney developed the concept designs for the 4000 square metre Hornby Centre following discussions with the community.
The new centre will have a range of community and recreational spaces, including a library, a lane pool, a learn-to-swim pool, a toddlers’ wet play area, a spa pool and a customer services zone.
There is also an espresso bar, a creative activities room, and multipurpose rooms that community groups can use for meetings.
A hydrotherapy pool could be included in the facility at a later date. The council said it was not currently in the scope of the project, but the Greater Hornby residents association and Hornby Rotary were coordinating a community fundraising effort so one could be added.

Christchurch-based Heritage Expeditions flagship Spirit of Enderby arrived at the Port of Lyttelton on Monday.
The arrival marked a trifecta of firsts: the first cruise ship of the summer to arrive in New Zealand, the first captained by New Zealand’s first and only female marine pilot, Joanne Laing, and the first vessel to dock at Lyttelton’s new $67 million cruise ship berth.
Lyttelton Port Company general manager Phil de Joux said he was not expecting the berth would be used by a cruise ship so soon.
“Obviously Covid’s had a huge impact on the cruise market, so we’re just stoked really."
The Spirit of Enderby sailed directly from Vladivostok in eastern Russia, and the crew had been in isolation for 43 days now.
“They had two weeks and two Covid tests moored offshore, then 29 days of sailing.”
The crew had another test at 9am on Monday, and remained confined to the ship for now.
The 50-passenger boat will sail to Invercargill to pick up its first passengers on November 24.
It will then head out on an expedition to Fiordland and Stewart Island.

New Zealand Police's Financial Intelligence Unit estimates New Zealanders lose $20-30 million annually to scams.
HOW TO AVOID A SCAM:
+ A genuine bank or organisation will never contact you to ask for your PIN, password or to move money to another account.
+ Never click on a link in an unexpected email or text – you could be giving access to your personal and financial details.
+ Always question uninvited approaches in case it is a scam. Instead, contact the company directly using a known email or phone number.
+ Don’t assume an email or phone call is authentic – just because someone knows your basic details (name and address, or mother’s maiden name) it doesn’t mean they are genuine.
+ Don’t be rushed into making a decision or financial transaction on the spot – a genuine bank or trusted organisation would never do this.
+ Listen to your instincts – if something feels wrong then it generally is.
If you believe you are the victim of a scam you can contact Police and report the matter via 105.
